12 CSX Color Server Installation Guide

Overview This Installation Guide describes installation and setup procedures, including installing print drivers. It also describes the CSX Color Server utilities that help you manage your system.

Printing with the CSX Color Server You can send and import any supported PDL file (for example, PostScript, PDF, EPS, VPS, VIPP) to print on the CSX Color Server. You can print from any open application on a PC, Macintosh or Unix client workstation. You can import a PDL file from the local hard drives, CD-ROM drives, or floppy drive connected to the CSX Color Server. You can also import files to be printed over the network from remote clients/file servers.

Use one of the following methods to print with the CSX Color Server:

Print from a client workstation using any application (such as, QuarkXpress, Adobe PhotoShop or Microsoft Word).

Print by downloading PostScript and CreoScitex VPS (Variable Print Specification) files from a client workstation. On a PC, this can be done using a downloading application such as PrintFile. On the Macintosh, it can be done by moving files using the drag-and-drop operation, or using the Adobe Downloader application.

Print by importing PDL files to the CSX Color Server.

The CSX Color Server enables you to choose the predefined network printer to which you want to print. This feature greatly increases efficiency, as all the job settings of the network printer will automatically be applied to your print jobs.

Note: Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows 2000, Windows NT operating systems are supported.

Setting up Client Workstations 13

Setting Up Client Workstations on the CSX Color Server Default Network Printers on PC and Macintosh Clients

For Macintosh and PC networks, the CSX Color Server provides two default network printers:

In addition, you can create new CMYK emulations and rename or delete ones existing in your system.

Virtual Printers

A virtual printer is a printer published on the network with specific parameters set for processing and printing on the CSX Color Server. The CSX Color Server contains a mechanism that automatically installs the published virtual printers on your client workstation with the PPD and suitable printer driver.

The CSX Color Server is predefined with two virtual printers:

ProcessPrint. Files sent to this printer are automatically processed and printed to the printer through the CSX Color Server.

PrintToStore. Files sent to this printer are automatically processed and stored in the Storage Folder of the CSX Color Server. You can later submit the jobs to be printed, or change the parameters of a job and resubmit it for processing.

If a job that is sent from the client, or downloaded to a particular virtual printer, contains preset parameters from the PPD, these options overwrite the parameters set in the virtual printer for that job. The 'Printer Default' options defined in the PPD use the default parameters set for that particular virtual printer.

Installing Fonts on the CSX Color Server

There are three types of fonts:

Type 1 - appropriate for Level II PostScript fonts.Type 1 fonts are the most commonly used fonts.

Type 3 - appropriate for Level I PostScript fonts.Type 3 fonts are generally older font types, and may not be supported by advanced RIPs.

Type 1 and Type 3 fonts are further subdivided into:

Printer fonts - When a job is sent as a PostScript file to the printer, a printer font is required to describe the font to the printer.

Screen fonts - Screen fonts are known as bitmap fonts. Screen fonts enable viewing of fonts onscreen as they will appear in print in the job.

It is possible to work with screen fonts on screen, but not printer fonts. However, it is not possible to print without printer fonts.

TrueType fonts - combine screen and printer font information together in one file. TrueType fonts reside in the job file. They are more frequently used with PC workstations than with Macintosh workstations.

Note: There is also a new type of TrueType fonts, known as OpenType.

When using any DTP application, you can control whether the font will be embeded in the PostScript file or not. It is recommended to embed font information in the PostScript file whenever possible.

Font Types

Administrating the System 421

When building a job file on a Macintosh workstation, it is possible to use a screen font only. When the file is processed on a PostScript laser printer, the printer font information must be added. This information can be located in:

The system folder

Installed in the Suitcase or Automatic Type Manager (ATM) programs.

Suitcase and ATM are programs that may be installed to enable DTP applications to take PostScript fonts from specific folders. They also enable management of fonts.

For example, if a font of a specific size is desired (for example, 10 points), usually the entire font information must be available in that size. ATM, however, only requires one font size. From this size, it can convert a font to the other sizes.

If you wish to print in bold, or italics, or variations of a standard font, then you require individual font files with the information for each font variation.

When working with a Macintosh workstations, Adobe Downloader is used to install fonts on the CSX Color Server.

Fonts and Macintosh Workstations

422 CSX Color Server Installation Guide

On PC workstations, as on Macintosh workstations, the font must be included in the PostScript file. There are no programs that correspond to Adobe Downloader for PC workstations.

It is not possible to use PC workstation fonts on Macintosh workstations, or vice versa.

The CSX Color Server supports Adobe RIP fonts.

Fonts can be built in specialized programs, such as Fontographer. In these programs, it is possible to differentiate between TrueType and Type 1 fonts.

Fontographer creates an additional file for each font with a *.AFM extension. *.AFM files are sometimes required in the RIP.

CreoScitex produces the TrueType2PS program that can convert TrueType fonts to Type 1 fonts. The format that results is known as Type 42.
