FEATURES/OPERATIONS
(1) Put the selector lever in P. (2) Depress the brake pedal, and press the POWER switch briefly and firmly (3) The READY light will blink. After a few seconds, when the light remains
steady and a beep sounds, you may begin driving.
Starting your vehicle
The Hybrid Synergy Drive System utilizes a computer-controlled gasoline engine and electric motor to provide the most efficient combination of power for the vehicle. To conserve energy, when the brakes are applied the braking force generates electricity which is then sent to the traction battery. In addition, the engine shuts off when the vehicle is stopped. The benefits are better fuel economy, reduced vehicle emissions and improved performance.
NOTE: Fuel consumption and energy information of the Hybrid System are shown on the Multi-Information Display (MID) and/or display audio system/navigation system screen (if equipped).
Tips for improved fuel economy
1. Ensure tire pressures are maintained at levels specified in the Owners Manual. 2. Link trips to reduce engine cold starts whenever possible. 3. Avoid driving at speeds that are higher than necessary, especially on the highway. 4. When possible, avoid sudden stops to maximize regenerative braking energy. 5. Minimize use of the air conditioning.

Quick overview-Toyota Safety Sense P (If equipped)
Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) P is a set of active safety technologies designed to help prevent or mitigate collisions across a wide range of traffic situations. TSS is designed to help support the drivers awareness, decision making and vehicle operation contributing to a safe and comfortable driving experience.
TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE
Pre-Collision System (PCS) Provides collision avoidance or damage mitigation support in speed ranges where rear end collisions are likely to occur.
Lane Departure Alert (LDA) Provides notification regarding the risk of unintended lane departure.
Auto High Beams (AHB) Vehicle detects lights of leading or opposing vehicles and automatically changes between high and low beam headlight settings.
Pedestrian Detection Function Advanced sensor system helps to recognize pedestrians and provide collision avoidance support and/or damage mitigation.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) The distance control mode will cruise at a set speed, decelerate to maintain a selected distance from a slower vehicle traveling in front of you and accelerate back up to the selected speed if the vehicle in front changes lanes or speeds up.
Refer to the Owners Manual for more details to understand these functions and complete safety precautions before attempting to use any of TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE P functions.
Sensors Two types of sensors, located behind the front grille and windshield, detect information necessary to operate the drive assist systems. The single-lens camera in front of inside rear view mirror detects and recognizes shapes and white or yellow lane markings.
Radar sensor Camera sensor
24
TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE
Pre-Collision System (PCS)
The Pre-Collision System uses a radar sensor and camera sensor to help detect vehicles and pedestrians in front of your vehicle. If the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision with a vehicle or pedestrian is high, the system warns the driver to take evasive action while the potential brake pressure is increased to help the driver avoid collision or reduce the impact to the vehicle and its occupants.
Note: PCS is enabled each time the engine switch is turned to Ignition On. The system can be disabled/enabled and the warning timing of the system can be changed.
Pre-collision warning
When the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision is high, a buzzer will sound and a warning message will be displayed on the Multi- Information Display (MID) to urge the driver to take evasive action. Pre-collision brake assist
When the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision is high, the system applies greater braking force in relation to how strongly the brake pedal is depressed.
Pre-collision braking
When the system determines that the possibility of a frontal collision is high, the system warns the driver. If the system determines that the possibility of a collision is extremely high, the brakes are automatically applied to help avoid the collision or reduce the collision speed.
Changing the pre-collision warning timing
Each time the PCS switch is pressed, the response to the warning distance changes as follows:

Disabling the Pre-Collision System (PCS)
To disable the system Press the PCS switch for 3 seconds or more. The PCS warning light will turn on and a message will be displayed on the Multi- Information Display (MID).
To enable the system Press the PCS switch again. The system is enabled each time the engine switch is turned to IGNITION ON mode.
Monocular camera sensor
Millimeter wave radar
As part of PCS, this function is also designed to first provide an alert and then automatic braking if needed.
Pedestrian Detection Function The Pre-Collision System also features a pedestrian detection function. Using a millimeter wave radar and monocular camera sensor, this advanced sensor system can recognize pedestrians in some circumstances. It may provide detection capability while driving at low as well as higher speeds.
26
The Lane Departure Alert system recognizes visible white or yellow lane markers via a camera sensor. The system alerts the driver with a warning buzzer sound and message in the Multi-Information Display (MID) when it detects the vehicle deviating from or swaying multiple times within its lane.
Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist Function
Press the LDA switch to turn the LDA system on. Depress again to turn it off.
Note: The system will continue in the last state it was in (ON or OFF) when the engine is started again.

High: Warns before the front tire crosses the lane marker. Standard: Warns when the front tire crosses the lane marker.
The sway warning function can detect swaying based on the vehicle location in the lane and the drivers steering wheel operation. To help prevent swaying, the system alerts the driver using a buzzer sound and a warning displays in the MID.
Sway control function
LDA function When the system determines that the vehicle might depart from its lane, a warning is displayed on the MID and the warning buzzer sounds to alert the driver.
Steering Assist function When the system determines that the vehicle might depart from its lane, the system provides assistance as necessary by operating the steering wheel in small amounts for a short period of time to keep the vehicle in its lane.
Vehicle sway warning When the vehicle is swaying or appears as if it may depart from its lane multiple times, the warning buzzer sounds and a message is displayed on the MID to alert the driver.
When the system determines that the vehicle might depart from its lane, the system provides assitance as necessary by operating the steering wheel in small amounts for a short period of time to keep the vehicle in its lane.
If the system detects that the steering wheel has not been operated for a fixed amount of time or the steering wheel is not being firmly gripped, a warning is displayed on the MID and the warning buzzer sounds.

Star Safety SystemTM
Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control provides cooperative control of the ABS, TRAC, VSC and EPS.
Enhanced VSC helps to maintain directional stability when loss of traction occurs during a turn.
Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)
Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) ABS helps prevent brakes from locking up by pulsing brake pressure to each wheel. This limits brake lockup and helps provide directional control for the current road conditions.
Toyotas ABS sensors detect which wheels are locking up and limits wheel lockup by pulsing each wheels brakes independently. Pulsing releases brake pressure repeatedly for fractions of a second. This helps the tires attain the traction that current road conditions will allow, helping you to stay in directional control.
Brake Assist (BA) Brake Assist is designed to detect sudden or panic braking, and then add braking pressure to help decrease the vehicles stopping distance. When there is only a split second to react, Brake Assist can add additional brake pressure more quickly than just the driver alone can.
VSC helps prevent loss of traction during cornering by reducing Hybrid System output, and Traction Control helps maintain traction on loose gravel and wet, icy, or uneven surfaces by applying brake force to the spinning wheel(s).
Toyotas TRAC sensors are activated when one of the drive wheels starts to slip. TRAC limits Hybrid System output and applies the brakes to the spinning wheel. This transfers power to the wheels that still have traction to help keep you on track.
Traction Control (TRAC)
Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) Toyotas ABS technology has Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) to help maintain control and balance when braking. Abrupt stops can cause a vehicle to tilt forward, reducing the braking power of the rear wheels. EBD responds to sudden stops by redistributing brake force to enhance the braking effectiveness of all four wheels.
SAFETY AND EMERGENCY FEATURES
All new Toyota vehicles come standard with the Star Safety SystemTM, which combines Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA) and Smart Stop Technology (SST).
