Be sure to read this section to familiarize yourself with all safety instructions. Read this section before proceeding with the hard disk drive (HDD) or Digital Video Disc (DVD) drive installation.

5. Do not use this apparatus near water.

6. Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.

7. Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.

8. Installation should be done only by qualified personnel and conform to all local codes.

9. CAUTION: These servicing instructions are for use by qualified service personnel only. To reduce the risk of electric shock do not perform any servicing other that contained in the operating instructions unless you are qualified to do so.

10. Only use replacement parts recommended by Pelco.

11. The unit must be properly shut down and turned off to install the hard disk drive and video data drive.

WARNING: It is critical that the DX4104 be disconnected for your safety. First, disconnect the power cord from the power source, and then disconnect it from the rear of the DVR.

12. The security surveillance service provided by the DX4104 is interrupted when it is taken offline.

13. Make sure you protect the unit and its components from electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Description

This manual describes how to install an HDD and a DVD drive in the DX4104 Series digital video recorder (DVR).

Depending on which DX4104 Series model you purchased, your unit contains one primary HDD, one primary and secondary HDD, or one primary HDD and a DVD. You can remove a secondary HDD and replace it with a DVD. For models that contain a DVD, you can remove the DVD and replace it with a secondary HDD.

The DX4104 accessories kit includes an optional SATA and power cable, DVD bracket, and OPEN label.

NOTE: Replacing an HDD with a DVD reduces the storage capacity of the DVR. Before removing an HDD, verify that you no longer need the storage.

MODELS The DX4104 supports the following HDD and DVD models:

PARTS LIST AND TOOLS To install the HDD or DVD drive, you will need a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1 and an optional small container to store screws (both are not supplied).

Interior Components Layout

Familiarize yourself with the DX4104 Series DVR interior layout before accessing the components within.

Accessing the Interior Components

To access the interior components:

1. Disconnect the power adapter cord from the power source.

2. Disconnect the power adapter from the rear of the unit.

3. Disconnect any cables or connections that may restrict access or interfere with the units removal.

4. Move the unit to an area that will provide full access to its internal components.

System Board: Provides connection to external devices and includes the units operating system.

SATA and Power Connector: Connects the primary HDD.

SATA and Power Connector: Connects the optional HDD or DVD.

Optional Device: Location for an optional HDD or DVD.

Primary HDD: Location for the primary HDD.

WARNINGS: It is critical that the power adapter be disconnected for your safety.

The chassis assembly includes parts with sharp edges. To avoid injury, use caution when working in and around the chassis and components.

The security surveillance service provided by the DX4104 Series DVR is interrupted when the unit is taken off line.

5. The unit and its components are susceptible to damage from improper handling and ESD. Refer to the Safe Handling of Hard Drives document for more information.

6. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, remove the chassis cover (refer to Figure 2): a. Remove the screw (one each) on the left and right side panels.

b. Remove the five screws on the rear panel that fasten the cover to the unit.

c. Carefully remove the chassis cover by sliding it back and up. Set the cover aside.

HDD Installation

You must observe the following warnings when installing a hard disc drive (HDD) to avoid data loss.

INSTALLING A PRIMARY HDD When installing a primary HDD in a DX4104 Series DVR you must remove the existing HDD before you install the replacement HDD.

1. Remove the SATA and power cables (refer to Figure 3).

a. On the HDD, press the SATA connector metal locking clip, and then pull straight back on the connector.

b. Press the power connector metal locking clip, and then pull straight back on the connector.

WARNINGS: HDDs are installed in a specific order at the factory. When removing an HDD, make sure to

label the drive with the location from which it was removed.

Make sure that you reinstall a used drive in the same location from which it was removed, and verify that the HDD is reconnected to its previous SATA connector.

2. Remove the primary HDD assembly (refer to Figure 4). a. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, remove the four screws that attach the

assembly to the chassis.

b. Gently lift the HDD assembly up and out of the chassis.

3. Place the primary HDD assembly upside down on an anti-static mat.

4. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, remove the four screws that attach the HDD to the bracket.

5. Lift out the HDD and place it on the anti-static mat.

6. If applicable, perform this step if the HDD is attached to a secondary HDD bracket. If the HDD is not attached to a bracket, go to step 7. a. Place the secondary HDD assembly upside down on an anti-static mat.

b. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, remove the four screws that attach the HDD to the bracket.

7. Attach the new HDD to the primary HDD bracket. a. Place the HDD bracket upside down on an anti-static mat.

b. Place the HDD in the bracket, and then align the HDD and bracket mounting holes.

c. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, reinstall the four screws that attach the HDD to the bracket.

8. Install the primary HDD assembly in the chassis (refer to Figure 6). a. Gently lower the HDD assembly into place.

b. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, reinstall the four screws that attach the HDD assembly to the chassis.

c. Connect the SATA and power cables to the connectors nearest to the primary HDD.

INSTALLING A SECONDARY HDD To install a secondary HDD in a DX4104 Series unit that does not contain a DVD drive, you must remove the existing HDD before installing the replacement HDD.

To install a secondary HDD in a DX4104 Series unit that contains a DVD drive, you must remove the existing DVD drive before you install the HDD.

NON-DVD DRIVE MODELS 1. Remove the secondary HDD bracket (refer to Figure 7).

a. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, remove the four screws that attach the secondary HDD bracket to the chassis.

b. Gently lift the bracket up and out of the chassis.

2. If applicable, perform this step if the new HDD is not attached to a secondary HDD bracket. If the HDD is attached to a secondary HDD bracket, go to step 3. a. Place the secondary HDD bracket upside down on an anti-static mat.

b. Place the HDD in the bracket, and then align the HDD and bracket mounting holes.

c. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, reinstall the four screws that attach the HDD to the bracket.

3. Install the secondary HDD assembly in the chassis. a. Gently lower the secondary HDD assembly into place.

b. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, reinstall the four screws that attach the HDD assembly to the chassis.

c. Connect the optional SATA and power cables to the connectors nearest to the secondary HDD.

4. Reassemble the unit (refer to Reassembling the Unit on page 17).

DVD DRIVE MODELS

NOTE: A secondary HDD bracket is required to install a secondary HDD.

1. Remove the DVD drive SATA and power cables (refer to Figure 8).

a. On the DVD drive, press the SATA connector metal locking clip, and then pull straight back on the connector.

b. Press the power connector metal locking clip, and then pull straight back on the connector.

2. Remove the DVD drive assembly (refer to Figure 8). a. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, remove the five screws that attach the DVD

drive assembly to the chassis.

b. Gently lift the DVD drive assembly up and out of the chassis.

c. Store the DVD drive assembly and the extra screw for future use.

3. If applicable, perform this step if the HDD is not attached to a secondary HDD bracket. If the HDD is attached to a secondary HDD bracket, go to step 4. a. Place the secondary HDD bracket upside down on an anti-static mat.

b. Place the HDD in the bracket, and then align the HDD and bracket mounting holes.

c. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, reinstall the four screws that attach the HDD to the bracket.

4. Install the secondary HDD assembly (refer to Figure 9). a. Gently lower the secondary HDD assembly into place.

b. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, reinstall the four screws that attach the HDD assembly to the chassis.

c. Connect the optional SATA and power cables to the connectors nearest to the secondary HDD.

5. Reassemble the unit (refer to Reassembling the Unit on page 17).

DVD Drive Installation

Depending on which DX4104 Series model you purchased, your unit may or may not contain a DVD drive.

Models without a DVD drive contain one primary HDD or one primary and one secondary HDD, and they can support up to 2 GB of storage capacity. These models allow you to remove the secondary HDD and replace it with a DVD.

Models with a DVD drive contain one primary HDD and a DVD, and they can support up to 1 GB of storage capacity. These models allow you to remove the DVD and replace it with a secondary HDD.

NOTES: Replacing an HDD with a DVD drive reduces the storage capacity of the DVR. Before removing an

HDD, verify that you no longer need the storage. The optional DVD drive may or may not arrive from the factory attached to a bracket. An optional

DVD drive bracket is included in the DX4104 accessories box.

NON-DVD DRIVE MODELS 1. Remove the secondary HDD SATA and power cables (refer to Figure 10).

a. On the HDD, press the SATA connector metal locking clip, and then pull straight back on the connector.

b. Press the power connector metal locking clip, and then pull straight back on the connector.

2. Remove the secondary HDD assembly (refer to Figure 10). a. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, remove the four screws that attach the HDD

assembly to the chassis.

b. Gently lift the secondary HDD assembly up and out of the chassis.

c. Label the secondary HDD with the location from which it was removed.

d. Store the HDD assembly in a safe and secure location. You may require future use of the HDD assembly for data retrieval purposes.

3. If applicable, perform this step if the DVD drive is not attached to the DVD drive bracket. If the DVD drive is attached to the bracket, go to step 4. a. Place the DVD drive in the DVD drive bracket, and then align the DVD drive and bracket

mounting holes.

b. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, reinstall the two screws on the left and right side that attach the DVD drive to the bracket.

4. Install the DVD drive assembly in the chassis. a. Gently lower the DVD drive assembly into place.

b. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, reinstall the four screws that attach the DVD drive assembly to the chassis.

5. Connect the optional SATA and power cables to the connectors nearest to the DVD drive.

6. Reassemble the unit (refer to Reassembling the Unit on page 17).

DVD DRIVE MODELS 1. Remove the secondary HDD bracket (refer to Figure 7 on page 11).

a. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, remove the four screws that attach the secondary bracket to the chassis.

b. Gently lift the bracket up and out of the chassis.

2. If applicable, perform this step if the DVD drive is not attached to the DVD drive bracket (refer to Figure 11). The screws for attaching the DVD drive to the bracket are located in the accessories kit. If the DVD drive is attached to a bracket, go to step 3. a. Place the DVD drive in the optional DVD drive bracket, and then align the DVD drive and

bracket mounting holes.

b. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, reinstall two screws on the left and right side that attach the drive to the bracket.

3. Install the DVD drive assembly in the chassis. a. Gently lower the DVD drive assembly into place.

b. Using a nonmagnetic Phillips screwdriver #1, fasten the four screws that attach the DVD drive assembly to the chassis.

c. Connect the optional SATA and power cables to the connectors nearest to the DVD drive.

4. On the units front panel, attach the OPEN label above the DVD drive eject button.

5. Reassemble the unit (refer to Reassembling the Unit on page 17).

Reassembling the Unit

1. Install the chassis cover using the seven screws you removed earlier.

2. Reinstall the unit, and then reconnect the cables and peripheral equipment.

3. Perform one of the following installations: HDD installation: To complete the HDD installation, refer to Formatting the HDD on page 18. DVD drive installation: The unit is ready for operation. To start the unit, connect the power

cord from the power adapter to a power source, and then connect the power adapter to the rear panel.

Formatting the HDD

The DX4104 Series DVR automatically detects when a new HDD is installed. It also detects when a current HDD is switched to a different SATA connector. After the unit starts, you are prompted to format the newly installed or existing HDD. HDDs that have not been switched to a different SATA connector are not reformatted.

To format the HDD:

1. Connect the power cord from the power adapter to a power source.

2. Connect the power adapter to the rear panel. After a few seconds, the DX4104 startup screen appears.

3. Wait until the New hard disk drive found dialog box appears.

4. Click the OK button. After the formatting process is completed, the Hard disk drive recovery complete dialog box appears.

5. Click the OK button. The unit will return to operation.

For information about configuring the HDD partition, refer to the DX4104 Server Operation/Configuration manual.

WARNING: Formatting an HDD deletes all data. Verify that the data is no longer needed before formatting an HDD.

PRODUCT WARRANTY AND RETURN INFORMATION

WARRANTY Pelco will repair or replace, without charge, any merchandise proved defective in material or workmanship for a period of one year after the date of shipment.

Exceptions to this warranty are as noted below: Five years:

Fiber optic products Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) transmission products CC3701H-2, CC3701H-2X, CC3751H-2, CC3651H-2X, MC3651H-2, and MC3651H-2X camera models

Three years: Pelco-designed fixed network cameras and network dome cameras with Sarix technology. Pelco-branded fixed camera models (CCC1390H Series, C10DN Series, C10CH Series, and IP3701H Series) EH1500 Series enclosures Spectra IV products (including Spectra IV IP) Camclosure Series (IS, ICS, IP) integrated camera systems DX Series digital video recorders (except DX9000 Series which is covered for a period of one year), DVR5100 Series digital video recorders,

Digital Sentry Series hardware products, DVX Series digital video recorders, and NVR300 Series network video recorders Endura Series distributed network-based video products Genex Series products (multiplexers, server, and keyboard) PMCL200/300/400 Series LCD monitors PMCL5xx Series FHD monitors

Two years: Standard varifocal, fixed focal, and motorized zoom lenses. DF5/DF8 Series fixed dome products Legacy Series integrated positioning systems Spectra III, Spectra Mini, Spectra Mini IP, Esprit, ExSite, and PS20 scanners, including when used in continuous motion applications. Esprit Ti and TI2500 Series thermal imaging products Esprit and WW5700 Series window wiper (excluding wiper blades). CM6700/CM6800/CM9700 Series matrix Digital Light Processing (DLP) displays (except lamp and color wheel). The lamp and color wheel will be covered for a period of 90 days.

The air filter is not covered under warranty. Intelli-M eIDC controllers

One year: Video cassette recorders (VCRs), except video heads. Video heads will be covered for a period of six months.

Six months: All pan and tilts, scanners, or preset lenses used in continuous motion applications (preset scan, tour, and auto scan modes).

Pelco will warrant all replacement parts and repairs for 90 days from the date of Pelco shipment. All goods requiring warranty repair shall be sent freight prepaid to a Pelco designated location. Repairs made necessary by reason of misuse, alteration, normal wear, or accident are not covered under this warranty.

Pelco assumes no risk and shall be subject to no liability for damages or loss resulting from the specific use or application made of the Products. Pelcos liability for any claim, whether based on breach of contract, negligence, infringement of any rights of any party or product liability, relating to the Products shall not exceed the price paid by the Dealer to Pelco for such Products. In no event will Pelco be liable for any special, incidental, or consequential damages (including loss of use, loss of profit, and claims of third parties) however caused, whether by the negligence of Pelco or otherwise.

The above warranty provides the Dealer with specific legal rights. The Dealer may also have additional rights, which are subject to variation from state to state.

If a warranty repair is required, the Dealer must contact Pelco at (800) 289-9100 or (559) 292-1981 to obtain a Repair Authorization number (RA), and provide the following information:

1. Model and serial number 2. Date of shipment, P.O. number, sales order number, or Pelco invoice number 3. Details of the defect or problem

If there is a dispute regarding the warranty of a product that does not fall under the warranty conditions stated above, please include a written explanation with the product when returned.

Method of return shipment shall be the same or equal to the method by which the item was received by Pelco.
