Connecting the A-1VL

Read the manuals supplied with your components. Dont connect the power cord until youve completed

all audio and video connctions.

RCA/Phono Connection Color Coding

RCA/Phono connections are usually color coded: red and white. Use red plugs to connect right-channel audio inputs and outputs (typically labeled R). Use white plugs to connect left-channel audio inputs and outputs (typically labeled L). And use yellow plugs to connect composite video inputs and outputs.

Push plugs in all the way to make good connections (loose connections can cause noise or malfunctions).

To prevent interference, keep audio and video cables away from power cords and speaker cables.

Connecting Your Speakers

Connect the right channel speaker to the RIGHT speaker connector on the A-1VL, and the left channel speaker to the LEFT speaker connecter. Connect the + connector on each speaker to the + connectors on the A-1VL, and connect the connec- tor on each speaker to the connectors on the A-1VL. Be sure to connect the positive and negative cables for the speakers properly. If they are mixed up, the left and right signals will be reversed and the audio will sound unnatural.

Caution:

Do not connect speakers having impedance values of 4 ohms or lower.

Do not connect more than one speaker cord to indi- vidual speaker terminals. Connecting more than one speaker cord may cause failure.

Unnecessarily long, or very thin speaker cables may affect the sound quality and should be avoided.

Be careful not to short the positive and negative wires. Doing so may damage the A-1VL.

1

Strip away approx. 5/8 inch (15 mm) of insulation from the ends of the speaker cables, and twist the bare wires tightly, as shown.

2

Twist the wire ends tightly together.

3

Unscrew the speaker terminal.

4

Fully insert the bare wires.

5

Screw the terminal tight.

Changing the Speaker

Impedance Value Setting

The A-1VL allows you to set the speaker impedance values according to the speakers you use, adjusting the optimum frequency characteristics against speaker loads. We recommend you set the SPEAKER IMPEDANCE SELECTOR setting to 8 OHMS MIN./SPEAKER for speakers having impedance of 8 ohms or higher. Likewise, you may want to set the setting to 4 OHMS MIN./SPEAKER for speakers having impedance of 4 ohms or higher.

Troubleshooting If you have any trouble using your A-1VL, look for a solution in the troubleshooting section. If you cant resolve the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer.

Cant turn on the A-1VL. Make sure that the power cord is properly plugged into the wall outlet. (page 11) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, wait ve seconds or more, then plug the cable in again. The power is turned off and the power indicator blinks in white. The amp protection circuit has been activated. Remove the power cord from the wall outlet immediately and contact

your Onkyo dealer.

Theres no sound, or its very soft. When you use the A-1VL as a power amplier (when the DIRECT function is turned on), the sound from the component

connected to the preamplier will be output. If you want to output the sound from a component connected to the A-1VL, or when you use the A-1VL as a preamplier, use the DIRECT button to turn off the DIRECT function.

Make sure that all audio connecting plugs are pushed in all the way. (page 9) Make sure that the inputs and outputs of all components are connected properly. Make sure that the polarity of the speaker cables is correct and that the bare wires are in contact with the metal part

of each speaker terminal. (page 9) Make sure that the input source is properly selected. (page 12) If the MUTE indicator blinks, press the remote controllers [MUTING] button to ummute the A-1VL. (page 12) To use a turntable with an MC-type cartridge requires a commercially available MC phono preamp. (page 10) Make sure that none of the connecting cables are bent, twisted, or damaged.

Noise can be heard. Using cable ties to bundle audio cables with power cords, speaker cables, and so on may degrade the audio perfor-

mance, so do not bundle cables and cords together. An audio cable may be picking up interference. Try repositioning your cables.

The remote controller doesnt work. Make sure that the batteries are installed with the correct polarity. (page 8) Install new batteries. Dont mix different types of batteries or old and new batteries. (page 8) Make sure that the remote controller is not too far away from the A-1VL, and that theres no obstruction between the

remote controller and the A-1VLs remote control sensor. (page 8) Make sure that the A-1VL is not subjected to direct sunshine or inverter-type orescent lights. Relocate if necessary.

(page 8) If the A-1VL is installed in a rack or cabinet with colored glass doors, the remote controller may not work reliably

when the doors are closed. (page 8)

Cant record. On your recorder, make sure the correct input is selected. The A-1VL is not equipped with digital input/output

terminals and can perform only analog recording. (page 13) The signal from the component connected to the MAIN IN terminal cannot be recorded.

Power

Audio

Remote Controller

Recording

The A-1VL contains a microcomputer for signal processing and control functions. In very rare situations, severe interference, noise from an external source, or static electricity may cause it to lock up. In the unlikely event that this happens, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, wait at least ve seconds, and then plug it back in again.

Onkyo is not responsible for damages (such as CD rental fees) due to unsuccessful recordings caused by the units malfunction. Before you record important data, make sure that the material will be recorded correctly.
