1-Year Limited Warranty

Net2Phone is a leading provider of voice-enhanced Internet communications services to individuals and businesses.

Recognized as the company that first bridged the Internet with the public switched telephone network, Net2Phone routes millions of minutes daily over the Internet. Using its advanced IP (Internet Protocol) network and technolo- gies, Net2Phone routes voice and other value-added applications worldwide. Internet calls are less expensive than traditional phone calls primarily because these calls are routed over the Internet. All NetPhone initiated phone calls are made through special gateways that reduce echoing and cross-talk, resulting in high-quality phone calls. Bypassing much of the traditional phone network makes it possible for Net2Phone to provide incredibly low rates for the millions of calls it delivers worldwide.

Getting to Know the Cable/DSL Voice Enabler The Cable/DSL Voice Enablers Rear Panel

The rear panel of the Voice Enabler is where all of the Voice Enablers con- nections are made.

Uplink The Uplink Port is where you uplink to your router, switch or hub. Connect one end of a UTP Category 5 cable to the Voice Enablers Uplink port. Connect the other end of the cable to the appropriate port on the back of your router, switch or hub (which is connected to the Internet).

Crossover Switch The Crossover Switch (X II) toggles the Uplink port between crossover mode (X) and straight- through mode (II). See the diagram below to determine the position the switch should be in for your situation.

Note: The diagram above is for reference purpos- es only. Every network is different. If you do not make a connection to the Voice Enabler by using the settings above, change the position of the Crossover Switch. 3

Phone The Phone Port is where you will connect your standard telephone.

Power The Power Port is where you will connect the included AC Power adapter.

Reset Button See the section below concerning the Voice Enablers Reset Button.

The Reset Button*

Briefly pressing the Reset Button will refresh the Voice Enablers connections, potentially clearing any jammed links.

Pressing the Reset Button and holding it in for a few seconds will clear all of the Voice Enablers data and restore the factory defaults. By reset- ting the Voice Enabler, you run the risk of creating conflicts between your PCs actual IP Addresses and what the Voice Enabler thinks their IP Addresses should be. You may be forced to reboot the entire system(s).

If your Voice Enabler locks up, simply power it down for 3 to 5 seconds by removing the power cable from the Voice Enablers Power Port.

Cable/DSL Voice Enabler s Front Panel LEDs

Power Green. The Power LED illuminates when the Voice enabler is powered on.

Diag Red. The Diag LED illuminates when the Voice Enabler goes through its self-diagnosis mode during boot-up. It will turn off upon successful completion of the diagnosis. If this LED stays on for an abnormally long period of time, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

In Use Net2Phone Green. The Net2Phone LED illuminates when there is an

open phone connection.

Link/Act Green. The Link/Act LED serves two purposes. If the LED is continuously illuminated, the Voice Enabler is successful- ly connected to a device through the Uplink port. If the LED is flickering, the Voice enabler is actively sending or receiving data.

Full/Col Green. The Full/Col LED also serves two purposes. If this LED is continuously illuminated, the connection made through the corresponding port is successfully running in Full Duplex mode. If the LED is off, the port is operating at half duplex. If the LED is flickering, the connection is experiencing collisions. Infrequent collisions are normal. If this LED is flickering too often, there may be a problem with your connection. Check the Troubleshooting section if you think there is a problem.

100 Orange. The 100 LED illuminates when a successful 100Mbps connection is made through the corresponding port. If the LED is off, the port is operating at 10Mbps.

Connecting Your Hardware Together and Booting Up

Once you are sure that you have the proper values on hand, you can begin the Installation and Setup of your EtherFast Cable/DSL Voice Enabler.

1. Connect a Category 5 (Ethernet) network cable from the Uplink Port on the back of the Voice Enabler to an open port on your router, switch or hub, which is connected to the Internet. Verify that the Crossover Switch is in the correct position. For more information about the Crossover Switch, types of cables, and which ports to connect to, refer to the chart below.

2. Connect the power-supply cable to the Power port on the rear of the Voice enabler, then plug the supplied AC adapter into a power outlet. The Power LED will illuminate green as soon as the power adapter is

connected. The Diag LED will illuminate red for a few seconds while the Voice

enabler goes through its internal diagnostic test. The LED will turn off when the self-test is complete.

3. Connect a Standard Phone Cord to the RJ-11 Port on the back of the Voice Enabler. Connect the other end of the cord to your standard tele- phone. You will now be able to access the Voice Over IP features from this telephone. Your Net2Phone account is NOT set up at this time. Refer to the section called Setting Up and Using Your New Cable/DSL Voice Enabler for more information.

The Hardware Installation is complete. Continue to the next page to con- figure your Voice Enabler.

Note: The diagram above is for reference purposes only. Every network is different. If you do not make a connec- tion to the Voice Enabler by using the settings above, change the position of the Crossover Switch.

Connecting the Cable/DSL Voice Enabler to Your Network Overview

Adding the Cable/DSL Voice Enabler to your existing router, switch or hub is easy. After connecting all your hardware together, you will have to set some values within the Voice Enablers Setup Utility.

You will need the following values from your Network Administrator in order to install the Net2Phone Cable/DSL Voice enabler:

Your account and PIN number from Net2Phone (to use their voice service) Your network-configured PCs fixed Internet IP Address (if applicable) Your network-configured PCs Computer Name and Workgroup Name Your Subnet Mask Your Default Gateway Your Primary DNS IP address

About Static & Dynamic IP Addresses

Static IP Addresses A static IP address is an IP address permanently assigned to a computer in a TCP/IP network. Static IP addresses are usually assigned to networked devices which are consistently accessed by multiple users, such as Server PCs, or printers.

Dynamic IP Addresses A dynamic IP address is an IP address that is automati- cally assigned to a client station (computer, printer, etc.) in a TCP/IP network. Dynamic IP addresses are typically assigned by a DHCP server, which can be a computer on the network or another piece of hardware. A dynamic IP address may change every time your computer connects to the network.

DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) DHCP is software that automati- cally assigns IP addresses to client stations logging onto a TCP/IP network. DHCP eliminates having to manually assign permanent IP addresses to every device on your network. DHCP software typically runs in servers and is also found in network devices such as Routers.

3. Once you know the Voice Enablers IP Address, open your web browser and type http:// and then the Voice Enablers IP address that you have written down in the browsers Address box. Press Enter. In the example below, the IP address is 192.168.1.2.

4. A username and password prompt will appear. Leave the User Name box empty and type admin (the default password) in the Password box. Click OK.

9

Setting Up and Using Your New Cable/DSL Voice Enabler Configuring the Cable/DSL Voice Enabler

Now that your Cable/DSL Voice Enabler is connected to your network, you can begin configuring your system.

1. You will need to know the IP address of the Voice Enabler in order to con- figure it. This is done using the telephone that is attached to the Enabler. Pick up the handset of the telephone that is attached to the Enabler and dial 1**. The currently assigned IP address of the Enabler will be read back to you. If you are read a number that is anything besides 0.0.0.0, write this number down and proceed to Step 3. If the IP address you are read is 0.0.0.0, proceed to Step 2.

2. If the IP address you are read is 0.0.0.0, then your Voice Enabler does not have an IP address. There is one of two ways of assigning the Voice Enabler an IP address. You must choose between the methods. You can- not use DHCP and a static IP address for your Voice Enabler at the same time.

a) If you are using DHCP software to assign IP addresses and your network is currently functioning properly, press the Reset button on the back of the Voice Enabler and dial 1** again. Once you are read an IP address other than 0.0.0.0, write it down and proceed to Step 3. If you are still read a 0.0.0.0 IP address, make sure that your Voice Enabler is connected properly and that the Power LED is lit. If you are still read a 0.0.0.0 IP address, then refer to the Troubleshooting section.

b) If you are using static IP addresses on your network, you need to determine what IP address you would like the Voice Enabler to have. Pick up the handset of the telephone that is attached to the Enabler and dial 1**, and then XXX*XXXX*XXX*XXX, where X is a digit in the IP address, and * is a period between them. For exam- ple, dialing 1**192*168*1*2 would result in assigning the Voice Enabler a static IP address of 192.168.1.2. Check the address by dialing 1** again and listening for it to be read back. If you are read the IP address as you assigned it, write it down and proceed to Step 3.

Host Name This field allows you to supply a host name for the Voice enabler. In most cases, leaving this field blank will work.

LAN IP Address These values refer to your internal network settings. You can change the IP Address information of the Voice Enabler here. Select either Obtain an IP Address Automatically (if you use DHCP), or select Specify an IP Address (if you are using a static IP address). If you select Specify an IP Address, you may have to enter the values for your Subnet Mask, your Default Gateway Address and your DNS. Verify that the set- tings match the TCP/IP settings of the other computers on your network. If you are unsure about automatic IP address assignment or static IP addreses, see the beginning of this section. All values that you enter here must be compatible with the rest of your network. You can also set the IP Address for the Voice Enabler using an attached telephone. For more information, see the beginning of this section.

Note: The Setup page shown in this graphic may differ from the one seen on your Voice Enabler.

Note: If you choose not to activate your Net2Phone account now, you can do it at any time by going to the Help tab in the Voice Enablers Web-based Utility. You will not be able to make any telephone calls using the Voice Enabler unti l you activate your Net2Phone account.

Placing Phone Calls Using the Cable/DSL Voice Enabler

Some settings of your Voice Enabler can be determined and/or changed using the telephone that is attached to the Enabler, rather than with the Web-based Utility. Refer to the chart below for a list of the settings that can be changed and how to change them.

Please note that 0** is the default, so if you have not changed any settings at all, using either the phone or the Web-based Utility, you are depending on your DHCP software to assign the Voice Enabler an IP address. Also, dialing any of the entries listed above with no other numbers after it will result in the Voice Enabler reporting that particular setting back to you. For example, if you dial 1** with no numbers after it, the Voice Enabler will read the cur- rently assigned IP address to you. If you dial 3** with no numbers after it, the Voice Enabler will read the currently assigned Gateway IP Address to you.

Using the Phone to Change the Voice Enablers Settings

14

Note: Changing any of these settings will affect how the Voice Enabler connects to and is recognized by your network. Make a note of all settings before changing them, so you can restore them if necessary. Entering improper values may result in an inability to make calls using the Voice Enabler.

15

Troubleshooting Common Problems and Solutions

This section provides possible solutions to problems regarding the installation and operation of the Cable/DSL Voice Enabler. Read below description to solve your problems. If you cant find an answer here, check the Linksys website at www.linksys.com.

1. The Diag LED stays lit when it shouldnt. The Diag LED lights up when the device is first powered up.

Meantime, the system will boot up itself and check for proper opera- tion. After finishing the checking procedure, the LED turns off to show the system is working fine. If the LED remains lit after this time, the device is not working properly. Try to re-flash the firmware by assign- ing a static IP address to the computer, then upgrade the firmware again. If that doesnt help, contact your dealer for further inspection.

2. I cant access the Cable/DSL Voice Enabler through the web browser . Check if both ends of the network cable and power adapter are properly

connected. Check if the status LEDs on the front panel are functioning properly.

If using Windows 95, 98 or ME, check the TCP/IP setup on the client side. Run "winipcfg" by clicking on the Start button, then selecting Run. The PC should have an IP address of 192.168.1.xxx ("xxx" is from 2 to 254.) Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0, the default gateway IP should be the Routers IP Address, and DNS (in "More".)

Same as above, check the IP Address of the Cable/DSL Voice Enabler. Double check your web browser settings and disable proxy settings.

EtherFast Cable/DSL Voice Enabler powered by Net2PhoneSMInstant BroadbandTM Series

3. Click Upgrade Firmware. A new page will appear.

4. Enter your Voice Enablers administration password into the Password Confirm box.

5. Click the Browse button and find the firmware upgrade file that you downloaded from the Linksys website. Double-click the upgrade file. This will place the file into the File Path: box.

6. When the correct file is in the File Path: box, click the Upgrade button and follow the instructions there. This will complete your firmware upgrade.

Filters Once your Internet connection has been established, you can click on the Net2Phone link in order to activate your Net2Phone Account, or to get infor- mation on your Net2Phone account.

What happens when I don't hear the dial-tone? There are chances that the WAV files have been corrupted. Either upgrade the firmware (see the section called Help) or, if you have already upgraded, reapply your firmware upgrade.

What should I do when the calls are getting dropped after a few minutes? Call Net2Phone Customer Service at (888)491-3645 to trace the call.

Why cant I call people using just Net2Phone or YAP software on their PCs? The Voice Enabler uses different methods of identifying phone numbers and IP addresses than the Net2Phone software only calling solution. The same goes for YAP software users.

What happens when calls get connected but only one person (caller or receiver) is able to hear? This could be your Internet Service Provier's (ISP) fire- wall problem. Contact your Internet Service Provider(ISP) for further assistance.

What should I do if I get a Connection Error"? First, check if the device is connected properly to the LAN. After that, check your Account ID and PIN to make sure that they are entered correctly.

Net2Phone Troubleshooting Guide

Can I set-up my Linksys Cable/DSL Voice Enabler powered by Net2Phone to make calls without setting it up and configuring it for my network? No, you must set up and configure your Voice Enabler on your network first.

Can I add a Voice Enabler to an existing Net2Phone Router for a total of two out- going phone lines? Yes.

Do these phone calls work behind NAT (Network Address Translation)? Yes

I already have a Net2Phone account number, can I use it in place the account number printed on my calling card, which was packaged with my Router? No. The Net2Phone account number that you are already using is for a different type of service and your Voice Enabler will not work with that account number. You must use the account number that is pre printed on the back of the calling card that came with the Voice Enabler.

Why would I want to use the Linksys Cable/DSL Voice Enabler powered by Net2Phone to make calls instead of using regular Net2Phone service? Because this service lets you make calls over the Internet with the ease of just picking up your phone. Also, these calls do not rely on using your computer. In fact, if you used a cordless phone with device, you could make Internet calls from any room in your house!

Can I use the Linksys Cable/DSL Voice Enabler powered by Net2Phone to replace my primary phone line? No. Any Net2Phone services provided through this Equipment are not intended to replace or be a substitute for primary line voice services or Plain Old Telephone Service ("POTS") and are not meant to provide guaranteed Automatic Number Identification or Automatic Location Information capabilities associated with 911 or E911 services or to permit access to 411 directory assistance services. Net2Phone will not be liable for any damages, expenses, liabilities, risks, or harms arising out of or related to the Net2Phone services provided through this Equipment.
