IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

Please read these safety instructions before attempting to use the machine.

DANGER - To reduce the risk of electric shock:

1 Always unplug the machine from the electrical outlet immediately after using, when cleaning, when making any user servicing adjustments mentioned in this manual, or if you are leaving the machine unattended.

WARNING - To reduce the risk of burns, fire, electric shock, or injury to persons.

2 Always unplug the machine from the electrical outlet when making any adjustments mentioned in the instruction manual: To unplug the machine, switch the

machine to the symbol O position to turn it off, then grasp the plug and pull it out of the electrical outlet. Do not pull on the cord.

Plug the machine directly into the electrical outlet. Do not use an extension cord.

Always unplug your machine if the power is cut.

3 Never operate this machine if it has a damaged cord or plug, if it is not working properly, if it has been dropped or damaged, or water is spilled on the unit. Return the machine to the nearest authorized dealer or service center for examination, repair, electrical or mechanical adjustment. While the machine is stored or in use

if you notice anything unusual, such as an odor, heat, discoloration or deformation, stop using the machine

and immediately unplug the power cord.

When transporting the machine, be sure to carry it by its handle. Lifting the machine by any other part may damage the machine or result in the machine falling, which could cause injuries.

When lifting the machine, be careful not to make any sudden or careless movements, otherwise you may injure your back or knees.

4 Always keep your work area clear: Never operate the machine with any

air openings blocked. Keep ventilation openings of the machine and foot control free from the build up of lint, dust, and loose cloth.

Do not store objects on the foot controller.

Do not use extension cords. Plug the machine directly into the electrical outlet.

Never drop or insert any object into any opening.

Do not operate where aerosol (spray) products are being used or where oxygen is being administered.

Do not use the machine near a heat source, such as a stove or iron; otherwise, the machine, power cord or garment being sewn may ignite, resulting in fire or an electric shock.

Do not place this machine on an unstable surface, such as an unsteady or slanted table, otherwise the machine may fall, resulting in injuries.

5 Special care is required when sewing: Always pay close attention to the

needle. Do not use bent or damaged needles.

Keep fingers away from all moving parts. Special care is required around the machine needle.

Switch the machine to the symbol O position to turn it off when making any adjustments in the needle area.

Do not use a damaged or incorrect needle plate, as it could cause the needle to break.

Do not push or pull the fabric when sewing, and follow careful instruction when freehand stitching so that you do not deflect the needle and cause it to break.

6 This machine is not a toy: Your close attention is necessary

when the machine is used by or near children.

The plastic bag that this machine was supplied in should be kept out of the reach of children or disposed of. Never allow children to play with the bag due to the danger of suffocation.

Do not use outdoors.

7 For a longer service life: When storing this machine, avoid

direct sunlight and high humidity locations. Do not use or store the machine near a space heater, iron, halogen lamp, or other hot objects.

Use only neutral soaps or detergents to clean the case. Benzene, thinner, and scouring powders can damage the case and machine, and should never be used.

Always consult the operation manual when replacing or installing any assemblies, the presser feet, needle, or other parts to assure correct installation.

8 For repair or adjustment: If the Light unit (light-emitting diode)

is damaged, it must be replaced by authorized dealer.

In the event a malfunction occurs or adjustment is required, first follow the

troubleshooting table in the back of the operation manual to inspect and adjust the machine yourself. If the problem persists, please consult your local authorized Brother dealer.

Use this machine only for its intended use as described in this manual.

Use accessories recommended by the manufacturer as contained in this manual.

THE MAIN PARTS

1 Bobbin winder (Page 13) This winds the thread onto the bobbin for use as the lower thread.

CAUTION

Connecting plugs

1 Connect the foot controller plug to the machine.

2 Connect the power supply plug to a wall outlet.

Note If a power outage occurs while the sewing

machine is being operated, turn off the main power and unplug the power supply cord. When restarting the sewing machine, follow the necessary procedure to correctly operate the machine.

(For U.S.A. only) This appliance has a polarized plug (one

blade wider than the other). To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug is intended to fit in a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not modify the plug in any way.

Use only regular household electricity for the power source. Using other power sources may result in fire, electric shock, or damage to the machine.

Make sure that the plugs on the power cord are firmly inserted into the electrical outlet and the power supply jack on the machine.

Do not insert the plug on the power cord into an electrical outlet that is in poor condition. Turn off the main power and remove the plug in the following circumstances:

When you are away from the machine After using the machine When the power fails during use When the machine does not operate correctly due to a bad connection or a disconnection During electrical storms

Use only the power cord included with this machine. Do not use extension cords or multi-plug adapters with many other appliances plugged in to

them. Fire or electric shock may result. Do not touch the plug with wet hands. Electric shock may result. When unplugging the machine, always turn off the main power first. Always grasp the plug to

remove it from the outlet. Pulling on the cord may damage the cord, or lead to fire or electric shock.

Do not allow the power cord to be cut, damaged, modified, forcefully bent, pulled, twisted, or bundled. Do not place heavy objects on the cord. Do not subject the cord to heat. These things may damage the cord and cause fire or electric shock. If the cord or plug is damaged, take the machine to your authorized dealer for repairs before continuing use.

Unplug the power cord if the machine is not to be used for a long period of time. Otherwise a fire may result.

Main power and sewing light switch

This switch turns the main power and sewing light on or off.

1 Turn on (toward the I mark) 2 Turn off (toward the O mark)

Foot controller

When you press the foot controller down lightly, the machine will run at a low speed. When you press harder, the machines speed will increase. When you take your foot off the foot controller, the machine will stop.

You should make sure that nothing is placed on the foot controller when the machine is not in use.

CAUTION

Note (For U.S.A. only) Foot Controller: Model KD-1902

This foot controller can be used on the machine with product code 885-X06, 885-X08, 885-X26, 885-X28. The product code is mentioned on the machine rating plate.

Checking the needle

The sewing needle must always be straight and sharp for smooth sewing.

Checking the needle correctly Put the flat side of the needle on a flat surface. Check the needle from the top and the sides. Dispose of any bent needles safely.

Replacing the needle

CAUTION

1 Turn off the machine.

2 Raise the needle by turning the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise) so that the mark on the wheel points up.

Do not allow pieces of cloth and dust to build up on the foot controller. Doing so could cause a fire or an electric shock.

Always turn off the machine before you change the needle. Otherwise, injuries may occur if the foot controller is accidentally pressed and the machine starts sewing.

Only use sewing machine needles for home use. Other needles may bend or break and cause injury.

Never sew with a bent needle. A bent needle will easily break and cause injury.

4 Hold the needle with your left hand, and then use an oval screwdriver to turn the needle clamp screw counterclockwise to remove the needle.

Do not use excessive force when loosening or tightening the needle clamp screw, otherwise certain parts of the sewing machine may be damaged.

5 With the flat side of the needle toward the back of the machine, insert the needle until it touches the needle stopper. Next, tighten the needle clamp using an oval screwdriver.

Install the twin needle in the same way.

CAUTION

Changing the presser foot

CAUTION

You will have to change the presser foot depending on what you want to sew and how.

1 Turn off the machine. Raise the presser foot lever.

2 Raise the needle by turning the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise) so that the mark on the wheel points up.

3 Press the black button at the back of the presser foot holder to release the presser foot.

4 Put a different presser foot on the needle plate so that the bar on the presser foot is in line with the slot on the shank.

Before replacing the needle, place fabric or paper under the presser foot to prevent the needle from falling into the hole in the needle plate.

Make sure you insert the needle until it touches the stopper, and securely tighten the needle clamp screw with an oval screwdriver, otherwise the needle may break or the machine may be damaged.

Always turn off the machine before you change the presser foot. If you leave the power on and step on the controller, the machine will start and you may be injured.

Always use the correct presser foot for the stitch pattern you have chosen. If you use the wrong presser foot, the needle may strike the presser foot and bend or break, and may cause injury.

Only use presser feet that have been designed to be used with this machine. Using any other presser foot may cause accident or injury.

5 Lower the presser foot lever and fix the presser foot onto the shank. If the presser foot is in the correct place, the bar should snap in.

To choose a stitch, simply turn the pattern selection dial in either direction. The next section shows recommended stitch lengths and widths.

Raise the needle by turning the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise) so that the mark on the wheel points up.

Setting the stitch length dial to changes the selected pattern to a stretch stitch.

If the presser foot is not installed with the correct orientation, the needle may strike the presser foot, which may bend or break the needle and cause injury.

When you use the pattern selection dial to choose a pattern, raise the needle by turning the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise) so that the mark on the wheel points up. If the needle is in the down position when you turn the pattern selection dial, the needle, presser foot or fabric may be damaged.

Stitch length dial

Depending on the selected stitch, you may need to adjust the stitch length for best results. The numbers marked on the stitch length dial represent the stitch length in millimeters (mm) (1/25 inch). THE HIGHER THE NUMBER, THE LONGER THE STITCH. With the 0 setting, material is not fed. This is used when sewing a button. The F-1 range is for making a satin stitch (closed zigzag stitch), which is used for making buttonholes and decorative stitches. The position needed for making the satin stitch varies according to the material and thread being used. To determine the exact dial position, first test the stitch and length settings on a scrap piece of fabric to observe the feeding of the material.

If the stitches are bunched together, lengthen the stitch length and continue sewing. Do not continue sewing without lengthening the stitch length, otherwise the needle may break and cause injury.

CAUTION Reverse sewing lever

You can use reverse sewing for back tacking and reinforcing seams. To sew in reverse, push the reverse sewing lever in as far as possible and hold it in that position while you lightly push the foot controller. To sew forward, release the reverse sewing lever. The machine will then sew forward.

CAUTION

After adjusting the stitch width, slowly turn the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise) and check that the needle does not touch the presser foot. If the needle hits the presser foot, the needle may bend or break.

If the stitches are bunched together, increase the stitch length. Continuing to sew with the stitches bunched together may result in the needle bending or breaking.

We designed the bobbin that comes with this machine. If you use bobbins from other models, the machine will not work properly. Only use the bobbin that comes with this machine or bobbins of the same type (part code: SA156, SFB: XA5539-151). Using other bobbins may cause damage to the machine.

1 Pull up the spool pin and put a spool of thread on this pin.

2 While holding the thread from the spool with your right hand, pass the thread toward you, in the groove on the thread guide. Then, pass the thread around the pre-tension disk and pull the thread in completely.

Make sure to pull out 7 to 10 cm (3-4 inches) of thread from the hole on the bobbin.

6 While holding the end of the thread, gently press the foot controller to wind the thread around the bobbin a few times. Then stop the machine.

Lower threading (for models equipped with a quick-set bobbin)

The thread can easily be passed behind the needle bar thread guide by holding the thread in your left hand, then feeding the thread with your right hand.

The needle threader can be used with a 75/11 through 100/16 home sewing machine needle. However, the needle threader cannot be used with a 65/9 home sewing machine needle. When using special thread such as transparent nylon thread or metallic thread, the needle threader cannot be used.

Thread with a thickness of 130/120 or thicker cannot be used with the needle threader.

The needle threader cannot be used with the wing needle or the twin needle.

Memo The lower the thread number, the thicker the thread; and the larger the needle number, the thicker the

Ball point needle Use the ball point needle when sewing on stretch fabrics or fabrics where skipped stitches easily occur. The factory recommended needle is HG-4BR (Organ). Schmetz needles JERSEY BALL POINT 130/705H SUK 90/14 may be used as a substitute.

Using the wrong combination, such as heavyweight fabric like denim with a small needle (65/9-75/11), may bend or break the needle. To avoid being injured, watch the needle carefully while you are using the machine. Keep your hands away from moving parts.

Do not stretch or pull the fabric during sewing, otherwise the needle may be damaged and you may be injured.

Do not use bent or broken needles, otherwise you may be injured. Take care that the needle does not hit basting pins or other objects during sewing. The needle

may break and you may be injured. Always use the correct presser foot. If you use the wrong presser foot, the needle may hit the

presser foot and bend or break and you may be injured. When you turn the handwheel by hand, always turn it toward you (counterclockwise).

Turning it the other way may cause the thread to tangle and damage the needle or fabric, and you may be injured.

Do not start sewing without placing the fabric under the presser foot, otherwise the presser foot may be damaged.

7 While holding the end of the thread and the fabric with your left hand, turn the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise) with your right hand to lower the needle to the starting point of the stitching.

Trial sewing

A trial piece of fabric should be sewn. Use a piece of fabric and thread that are the same as those used for your project, and check the thread tension and stitch length and width.

Changing the sewing direction

Stop the machine with the needle in the fabric at the point where you want to change the sewing direction, and then raise the presser foot lever. Using the needle as a pivot, turn the fabric, lower the presser foot lever, and then continue sewing.

Sewing thick fabrics

If the fabric does not fit under the presser foot If the fabric does not fit easily under the presser foot, raise the presser foot lever even higher to bring the presser foot to its highest position.

Sewing thin fabrics

When sewing thin fabrics, the stitching may become misaligned or the fabric may not feed correctly. If this occurs, place thin paper or stabilizer material under the fabric and sew it together with the fabric. When you have finished sewing, tear off any excess paper.

First, baste the pieces of fabric together, and then sew without stretching the fabric.

Stitching cylindrical pieces

Removing the flat bed attachment makes it easier to sew cylindrical pieces such as cuffs and pant legs, or hard- to-reach areas.

Note When you are finished with free-arm

sewing, install the flat bed attachment back in its original position.

Sewing with a twin needle (Option)

We have designed your machine so you can sew with this needle and two top threads. You can use the same color or two different colors of thread for making decorative stitches.

CAUTION

Attaching the twin needle Attach the twin needle in the same way as a single needle (see page 78). The flat side of the needle should face toward the back and the rounded side should face toward you.

Twin needle threading You should thread each needle separately.

Note Models equipped with a needle threader You cannot use the needle threader to

thread the twin needle. Instead, thread the twin needle by hand, from front to back. Using the needle threader may damage the machine.

1 Thread the left needle. Follow the same instructions for threading a single needle (see page 17).

2 Thread the right needle. Thread the right needle in the same way that you threaded the left needle using the thread from the spool on the extra spool pin, but do not pass the thread through the guide above the needle before you pass it through the eye of the right needle.

When using the twin needle, be sure to attach zigzag foot J, otherwise the needle may break or the machine may be damaged.

After adjusting the stitch width, slowly turn the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise) and check that the needle does not touch the presser foot. If the needle hits the presser foot, the needle may bend or break.

When using the twin needle, make sure the stitch width is not set above 2.5 since this may cause the needle to hit the needle plate and break.

When changing the sewing direction, be sure to raise the needle from the fabric, and then raise the presser foot lever and turn the fabric. Otherwise the needle may break or the machine may be damaged.

Thread tension

The tension of the thread will affect the quality of your stitches. You may need to adjust it when you change fabric or thread.

Memo We recommend that you do a test sample

on scrap of a fabric before you start to sew.

Correct tension Correct tension is important as too much or too little tension will weaken your seams or cause puckers on your fabric.

Upper tension is too tight Loops will appear on the surface of the fabric.

Note If the bobbin thread was incorrectly

threaded, the upper thread may be too tight. In this case, refer to Lower threading on page 15 and rethread the bobbin thread.

Solution Reduce the tension by turning the upper tension control dial to a lower number.

Upper tension is too loose Loops appear on the back of the fabric.

Note If the upper thread was incorrectly threaded,

the upper thread may be too loose. In this case, refer to Upper threading on page 17 and rethread the upper thread.

Solution Increase the tension by turning the upper tension control dial to a higher number.

Straight stitching

Straight stitches are used for sewing plain seams.

* Turn the stitch width dial to adjust the needle position. Setting the dial to 5 selects the left needle position; setting the dial to 0 selects the right needle position. Refer to Stitch width dial on page 12.

Top stitching and stretch materials You can use a straight stitch for top stitching and sewing lightweight fabrics. You can use a triple stretch stitch for sewing stretch fabrics.

Zigzag stitching

Zigzag stitch Turn the pattern selection dial to the Zigzag Stitch, and then start sewing.

We recommend that you sew using the Straight Stitch at the beginning and end of zigzag stitches. (This acts as a reinforcement stitch.)

Satin stitch Setting the Zigzag Stitch length in the F-1 range produces a satin stitch (close zigzag stitch). The Satin Stitch can be used for making buttonholes and decorative stitches. Set the pattern selection dial to the Zigzag Stitch, set the stitch length in the F-1 range, and set the stitch width dial between 0 and 5.

Blind hem stitching

You can use the Blind Hem Stitch to finish the edge of a project, like the hem of a pair of trousers, without the stitch showing. Blind Hem Stitch: sewing on non-stretch fabrics. Stretch Blind Hem Stitch: for stretch fabrics.

Memo When the size of cylindrical pieces is too

small to slide onto the arm or the length is too short, the fabric will not feed and desired results may not be achieved.

2 Fold the fabric along the desired edge of the hem, and press.

Shell tuck stitching

The Shell Tuck Stitch can be used to sew a picot (lace- like) edge on lightweight fabric.

1 Adjust the thread tension so that it is tighter than normal.

2 Place the fabric under the presser foot so that it will be sewn along the bias, with the straight stitches sewn on the seamline and the zigzag stitches sewn slightly over the folded edge.

3 Sew at a slow speed.

Elastic stitching

You can use the Elastic Stitch for mending, sewing elastic or joining fabric. Each is explained below.

Mending

1 Place the reinforcement fabric under the area you want to mend.

Use the basting pins to hold the reinforcement fabric.

2 Following the line of the tear, sew using the Elastic Stitch as shown.

Joining fabric You can use the Elastic Stitch to join two pieces of fabric together and it is very effective when sewing knitted fabrics. If you are using nylon thread, the stitch will not be visible.

1 Put the edge of the two pieces of fabric together and center them under the presser foot.

2 Sew them together using the Elastic Stitch. Make sure you keep the two fabric edges close together.

Use the basting pins to hold the two fabric edges close together.

Double action stitching

These stitches are used for joining two pieces of fabric, such as when making patchwork.

Fagoting

These stitches are used to join two pieces of fabric while leaving a space between their edges. This stitch is more decorative when thicker thread is used.

1 Use an iron to fold the two pieces of fabric along their seams.

2 Baste the two pieces of fabric, separated by about 2 mm (1/16 inch), onto thin paper or a sheet of water-soluble stabilizer.

Overedge stitching

Feather stitching

Use the Feather Stitch as a decorative top stitch when embroidering or when hemming blankets, tablecloths, or draperies.

1 Place the fabric right side up and sew 1 cm (3/8 inch) from the edge of the fabric.

2 Trim close to the stitching. The stitch will prevent the fabric from unravelling.

Triple zigzag stretch stitching

This stitch can be used wherever a zigzag stitch would be used to sew heavyweight stretch fabrics. The Triple Zigzag Stretch Stitch can also be used as a decorative top stitch.

Decorative stitching

These stitches can be used for decorative top stitching and for smocking. Refer to page 10 for the recommended stitch width and length of each stitches.

CAUTION

Making a buttonhole (1-step automatic buttonhole)

Making a buttonhole is a simple process that provides reliable results. With the 1-step Automatic Buttonhole Stitch pattern, a buttonhole is sewn by automatically changing the sewing direction when the buttonhole lever and buttonhole foot are used.

Note When sewing a stitch pattern other than for

a buttonhole, do not lower, touch or move the buttonhole lever, otherwise the stitching may become misaligned or sewn incorrectly.

Memo We recommend that you practice making a

buttonhole on a scrap piece of fabric before you try it on an actual garment.

When making buttonholes on soft fabrics, place a stabilizer material on the underside of the fabric.

Making a buttonhole

1 Using tailors chalk, mark the position and length of the buttonhole on the fabric.

If the button does not fit in the button guide plate Add together the diameter and thickness of the button, and then set the button guide plate to the calculated length. (The distance between the markings on the presser foot scale is 5 mm (3/16 inch).)

If thick seams are being sewn and the fabric does not feed, sew with the coarser (longer) stitch.

b Insert a pin at the end of the buttonhole stitching to prevent the stitching from being cut, and then use a seam ripper to cut towards the pin and open the buttonhole.

CAUTION

Making a buttonhole on stretch fabrics When sewing buttonholes on stretch fabric, the buttonhole stitching is sewn over a gimp thread.

1 Follow steps 1 to 6 from Making a buttonhole on page 34.

2 Hook the gimp thread onto the back end of the buttonhole foot, bring the two gimp thread ends to the front of the foot, insert them into the grooves, and then temporarily tie them there.

3 Set the stitch width to match the diameter of the gimp thread.

4 Start sewing.

5 Once sewing is completed, gently pull the gimp thread to remove any slack, and then trim off the excess.

Adjusting buttonholes

If the stitching on the two sides of the buttonhole is not the same, you can make the following adjustments.

1 Set the stitch length dial between F and 1.5 and sew the buttonhole on a scrap piece of fabric to observe how the material is fed.

2 If the right side of the buttonhole is too open or tight, adjust the feeding of the material with the stitch length dial.

3 After obtaining a satisfactory feed on the right side, stitch the buttonhole and observe the feeding.

4 If the left side is too open or tight compared with the right side, adjust the buttonhole fine-adjustment screw as described in the following paragraphs.

When opening the buttonhole with the seam ripper, do not place your hands in the cutting path, otherwise injuries may result if the seam ripper slips. Do not use the seam ripper in any other way than how it is intended.

If the left side is too open, turn the buttonhole fine-adjustment screw with a large screwdriver in the direction. If the left side is too tight, turn the buttonhole fine-adjustment screw with a large screwdriver in the + direction.

This adjustment ensures both sides of the buttonhole are the same.

Sewing buttons

1 Measure the distance between the buttonholes and mark the fabric. Then adjust the stitch width so that it is the same as the distance between the holes in the button.

2 Turn off the machine.

3 Change the foot to the button sewing foot M.

4 Place the darning plate on the needle plate.

5 Turn on the machine.

6 Put a button between the foot and the fabric and make sure that the needle enters the holes without hitting the button. If it hits, see step 1.

7 At a slow speed, sew about 10 stitches.

CAUTION

8 Pull the upper thread at the end of the stitching to the wrong side of the fabric, and then tie it with the bobbin thread.

Use scissors to cut the upper thread and the bobbin thread at the beginning of the stitching.

Zipper insertion

You can use the zipper foot I to sew different types of zippers, and can easily position it to the right or left side of the needle. When sewing with the zipper on the right side, attach the shank to the left pin of the zipper foot. When sewing with the zipper on the left side, attach the shank to the right pin of the zipper foot.

Turn the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise) and check that the needle does not touch the zipper foot before you start sewing. Choosing a different stitch will cause the needle to hit the presser foot and break, and you may be injured.

Make sure the needle does not hit the zipper during sewing. If the needle hits the zipper, the needle may break and you may be injured.

Gathering

1 Loosen the tension of the upper thread so that the lower thread lies on the underside of the material.

2 Sew a single row (or many rows) of straight stitches.

3 Pull the lower threads to gather the material.

Darning

1 Turn off the machine. Place the darning plate on the needle plate, then turn on the machine.

2 Either remove both the presser foot and presser foot holder assembly and then lower the presser foot lever.

3 Put the section you want to darn under the presser foot together with fabric for reinforcement.

4 Turn on the machine.

5 Begin sewing by alternating between gently drawing the work away from you and pulling it toward you.

Note Sew while holding the fabric stretched in

order to keep the fabric held down.

6 Repeat this motion until the darn section is filled with parallel lines of stitching.

Appliqus

You can create an applique by cutting a different piece of fabric into a shape and using it as a decoration.

1 Baste the cut design to the fabric.

2 Carefully sew around the edge of the design with a zigzag stitch.

Using the walking foot

The walking foot is very useful for sewing materials such as vinyl cloth, synthetic leather, thin leather, etc. These materials are difficult to feed when sewing. The walking foot prevents these materials from crumpling, slipping or sticking between the presser foot and the material.

Note Only use the walking foot with straight or

zigzag stitches. Do not use other patterns. Reverse stitches can not be sewn with the walking foot.

1 Turn off the machine.

2 Raise the needle and the presser foot.

3 Loosen the presser foot screw to remove the presser foot holder.

Using the quilting guide

Use the quilting guide to sew parallel stitches that are equally spaced.

1 Insert the stem of the quilting guide into the hole at the rear of the walking foot or presser foot holder.

Using the quilting foot

The Quilting Foot is useful for darning and free-motion machine quilting.

4 Position the fabric (wrong side facing up) under the presser foot. Lower the needle 3 mm (1/8 inch) from the edges of the fabric, lower the presser foot, and then sew 2 or 3 stitches.

5 Raise the needle and the presser foot, then hold the ends of the upper and lower thread to prevent them from being pulled out of the fabric and pull the fabric out from the front of the presser foot.

6 Holding both threads, pass them through the curled part of the presser foot and pull them toward the back of the presser foot. Wrap the fabric around the curled part of the presser foot in the same way. Position the edge of the fabric just behind the needle and lower the presser foot.

7 Without allowing the fabric to stick out from the right side of the presser foot, lightly pull on the thread while slowly sewing.

8 After sewing 2 (3/4 inch) to 3 cm (1 1/8 inch) of the fabric, release the thread and guide the fabric from the front of the presser foot with your both hands. Keep a uniform amount of fabric wrapped around the presser foot curl until the seam is completed.

If too little fabric is wrapped around the curl, then a threefold seam is not being sewn

Pull the fabric held in your right hand to the left in order to increase the amount of fabric wrapped in the presser foot curl. At the same time, carefully guide the fabric to the right with your left hand.

If too much fabric is wrapped around the curl, then a wide threefold seam is being sewn

Pull the fabric held in your right hand to the right in order to decrease the amount of fabric wrapped in the presser foot curl. At the same time, carefully guide the extra fabric to the left with your left hand.

Using the blind stitch foot

This foot comes in handy not only for blind hem stitching, but also for sewing fabric edges and seams.

When edge stitching

1 Turn off the machine.

2 Attach the blind stitch foot. Turn on the machine.

3 Position the needle the distance you want the stitch to be from the edge of the fabric, and then lower the needle in that position.

4 Turn the foot guide screw and carefully adjust to guide the fabric.

MAINTENANCE

Restrictions on oiling

In order to prevent damaging this machine, it must not be oiled by the user. This machine was manufactured with the necessary amount of oil applied to ensure correct operation, making periodic oiling unnecessary.

If problems occur, such as difficulty turning the handwheel or an unusual noise, immediately stop using the machine, and contact your authorized dealer or the nearest authorized service center.

Precautions on storing the machine

Do not store the machine in any of the locations described below, otherwise damage to the machine may result, for example, rust caused by condensation.

INSTRUCCIONES DE SEGURIDAD IMPORTANTES

Lea estas instrucciones de seguridad antes de utilizar la mquina.

Si observa algo inusual (como olor,

calor, decoloracin o deformacin) con la mquina guardada o en uso, deje de utilizar la mquina y desenchufe inmediatamente el cable de la corriente.

Cuando traslade la mquina, tmela por su asa. Si se levanta desde cualquier otra pieza, la mquina puede daarse o caerse, lo que podra causar lesiones.

No la use en lugares donde se utilicen productos con aerosoles (atomizadores), ni en sitios donde se est administrando oxgeno.

No utilice la mquina cerca de una fuente de calor, como un horno o una plancha; de lo contrario, la mquina, el cable de corriente o la prenda que se est cosiendo podran incendiarse, provocando un incendio o una descarga elctrica.

No coloque esta mquina sobre una superficie inestable, como una mesa que se tambalee o est inclinada ya que, de lo contrario, la mquina podra caerse y provocar lesiones.

5 Hay que tener especial cuidado al coser: Preste siempre especial atencin a la aguja.

No utilice agujas dobladas o daadas. Mantenga los dedos alejados de todas las

La bolsa de plstico en la que se suministra esta mquina debe mantenerse fuera del alcance de los nios o desecharse. No permita en ningn caso que los nios jueguen con la bolsa debido al riesgo de asfixia.

No la utilice en el exterior.

7 Para una vida til ms prolongada: Cuando guarde esta mquina, evite

Conexin de enchufes

1 Enchufe la clavija del pedal a la mquina.

2 Conecte el enchufe en una toma de corriente de la pared.

Nota Si se produce un corte de corriente mientras

est utilizndose la mquina de coser, apague la mquina y desenchufe el cable de corriente. Al volver a poner en funcionamiento la mquina de coser, siga el procedimiento necesario para utilizar la mquina correctamente.

(Solamente para EE. UU.) Este aparato tiene un enchufe polarizado

(una patilla ms ancha que la otra). Para reducir el riesgo de descarga elctrica, este enchufe est diseado de forma que presenta una nica posicin de ajuste a una toma polarizada. Si el enchufe no se ajusta perfectamente a la toma, dele la vuelta. Si el problema persiste, pngase en contacto con un electricista cualificado para instalar una toma adecuada. No realice modificaciones de ningn tipo en el enchufe.

Utilice solamente electricidad domstica regular para la alimentacin de la mquina. El uso de otras fuentes de alimentacin puede provocar incendios, descargas elctricas o averas en la mquina.

Asegrese de que las clavijas del cable de corriente estn firmemente insertadas en la toma de corriente y el enchufe hembra en la mquina.

No inserte el enchufe del cable de corriente en una toma en mal estado. Apague la mquina y desenchufe el cable de la corriente en las situaciones siguientes:

Utilice exclusivamente el cable de corriente que se suministra con esta mquina. No utilice cables alargadores ni adaptadores de varias clavijas con otros aparatos

conectados. Podra producirse un incendio o una descarga elctrica. No toque el enchufe con las manos hmedas. Podra recibir una descarga elctrica. Apague siempre la mquina antes de desenchufar el cable de corriente. Sujete siempre el

enchufe para sacarlo de la toma de corriente. Si tira del cable podra daarlo, o provocar un incendio o una descarga elctrica.

No corte, estropee, cambie, doble, estire, tuerza o enrolle el cable. No coloque objetos pesados sobre el cable. No exponga el cable al calor. Todo esto podra daar el cable y provocar un incendio o una descarga elctrica. Si el cable o el enchufe est daado, lleve la mquina a su distribuidor autorizado para que la repare antes de volver a utilizarla.

Desenchufe el cable de la corriente si no va a utilizar la mquina durante un largo perodo de tiempo. De no hacerlo, podra producirse un incendio.

Interruptor de la alimentacin y de luz de cosido

Este interruptor enciende y apaga la alimentacin y la luz de cosido.

Cuando pise el pedal lentamente, la mquina funcionar a baja velocidad. Cuando lo pise ms fuerte, la velocidad de la mquina aumentar. La mquina se detendr cuando quite el pie del pedal.

Debe asegurarse de que no haya nada sobre el pedal cuando no se est usando la mquina.

Antes de cambiar la aguja, coloque tela o papel debajo del pie prensatela para evitar que la aguja caiga en el orificio de la placa de la aguja.

Control de longitud de puntada

Segn el tipo de puntada seleccionado, es posible que necesite ajustar la longitud de la puntada para obtener los mejores resultados. Los nmeros indicados en el control de longitud de puntada representan la longitud de la puntada en milmetros (mm) (1/25 pulg.). CUANTO MAYOR SEA EL NMERO, MS LARGA SER LA PUNTADA. Con el ajuste 0, el material no se arrastra. Este ajuste se emplea para coser botones. El intervalo F-1 est destinado a la puntada para satn (puntada de zig-zag pequea), empleada para realizar ojales y para puntadas decorativas. La posicin adecuada para la puntada para satn vara segn el material y el hilo que se utilicen. A fin de determinar la posicin exacta del control, realice primero una prueba de la puntada y la longitud elegidas en un retal para observar el avance del material.

Con el pulsador de retroceso puede hilvanar en reversa y reforzar costuras. Para coser en reversa, empuje el pulsador de retroceso todo lo posible y mantngalo en esa posicin mientras pisa ligeramente el pedal. Para coser hacia delante, suelte el pulsador de retroceso. 1 COMBINACIONES DE TELA, HILO Y AGUJA

Nota No utilice nunca hilo del 20 o inferior. Puede producir averas.

Recuerde Cuanto ms pequeo sea el nmero de hilo, ms grueso ser el hilo. Cuanto ms grande sea el nmero

de aguja, ms gruesa ser la aguja.

Aguja de punta redonda Utilice la aguja de punta redonda para coser en telas elsticas o telas en las que es fcil que las puntadas queden sueltas. La aguja recomendada de fbrica es HG-4BR (Organ). Puede utilizar en su lugar agujas Schmetz JERSEY BALL POINT 130/705H SUK 90/14.

Hilo de nylon transparente Utilice una aguja entre 90/14 y 100/16, con independencia de la tela o del hilo.

Asegrese de seguir las combinaciones de aguja, hilo y tela que se indican en la tabla. El uso de una combinacin incorrecta (por ejemplo, una aguja pequea (entre 65/9 y 75/11) para una tela pesada como el tejano), podra romper o doblar la aguja. Una combinacin incorrecta tambin podra causar que la costura fuera irregular, la tela se frunciera o la mquina dejara puntadas sueltas.

Lea lo siguiente antes de utilizar la mquina

Comienzo de la costura

1 Encienda la mquina.

2 Suba la aguja girando la rueda hacia usted (en sentido contrario a las manecillas del reloj), de manera que la marca de la rueda apunte hacia arriba.

3 Gire el selector de puntadas para seleccionar una puntada (consulte las pginas 912).

4 Cambie el pie prensatela (Consulte la pgina 8).

5 Suba la palanca del pie prensatela.

6 Coloque la tela debajo del pie prensatela, pase el hilo debajo del pie prensatela y saque unos 5 cm (2 pulg.) del hilo hacia la parte trasera de la mquina.

Para evitar lesiones, observe con atencin la aguja mientras utiliza la mquina. Mantenga las manos alejadas de las piezas en movimiento.

No estire ni empuje la tela durante la costura, pues la aguja podra daarse y producir lesiones.

No utilice agujas dobladas o rotas, ya que podra lesionarse. Tenga cuidado de que la aguja no golpee los alfileres de hilvanado ni otros objetos durante la

costura. La aguja podra romperse y usted podra lesionarse. Utilice siempre el pie prensatela adecuado. Si utiliza un pie prensatela errneo, la aguja

puede golpearlo y doblarse o romperse, y podra causar lesiones. Al girar la rueda a mano, grela siempre hacia usted (en sentido contrario a las manecillas del

reloj). Si la gira en sentido contrario, el hilo podra engancharse y causar daos en la aguja o la tecla, y podra lesionarse.

No comience a coser sin colocar la tela bajo el pie prensatela; de lo contrario, el pie prensatela podra daarse.

7 Mientras sujeta el extremo del hilo y la tela con la mano izquierda, gire la rueda hacia usted (en sentido contrario a las manecillas del reloj) con la mano derecha para bajar la aguja al punto de inicio de la costura.

8 Baje la palanca del pie prensatela.

9 Pise lentamente el pedal.

La mquina comienza a coser.

0 Retire el pie del pedal. La mquina deja de coser.

Con el pulsador de retroceso puede hacer costura en reversa para hilvanar en reversa y reforzar costuras. Consulte Pulsador de retroceso en la pgina 13 para obtener ms informacin.

Costura de prueba

Debe coserse una prueba en un retal. Utilice una tela y un hilo que sean del mismo tipo que vaya a utilizar para su labor y compruebe la tensin del hilo y la longitud y anchura de la puntada.

Cambio de la direccin de costura

Pare la mquina con la aguja en la tela en el punto en el que desee cambiar la direccin de costura y, a continuacin, suba la palanca del pie prensatela. Utilizando la aguja como eje, gire la tela, baje la palanca del pie prensatela y contine cosiendo.

Costura en telas gruesas

Si la tela no avanza debajo del pie prensatela Si la tela no avanza bien debajo del pie prensatela, levante todava ms la palanca del pie prensatela hasta colocarlo en la posicin ms elevada.

Si se cose en tela de ms de 6 mm (15/64 pulg.) o si la tela se empuja con demasiada fuerza, la aguja podra romperse o doblarse.

Costura en telas finas

Al coser en telas finas, las puntadas podran no quedar alineadas o la tela podra no avanzar correctamente. En ese caso, coloque debajo de la tela un papel fino o un material estabilizador y csalo junto con la tela. Cuando haya terminado de coser, quite el papel sobrante.

Costura en telas elsticas

En primer lugar, hilvane juntas las piezas de tela y, a continuacin, cosa sin estirar la tela.

Costura de piezas cilndricas

Si se extrae la unidad de cama plana resultar ms sencillo coser piezas cilndricas, como los puos y las perneras del pantaln, o zonas de difcil alcance.

1 Deslice la unidad de cama plana hacia la izquierda para abrirla.

Con la unidad de cama plana quitada, es posible la costura de brazo libre.

Nota Cuando termine con la costura de brazo

libre, vuelva a colocar la unidad de cama plana en su posicin original.

2 Deslice la parte que desee coser sobre el brazo y, a continuacin, cosa desde la parte superior.

Costura con aguja gemela (opcin)

La mquina est diseada para que pueda coser con esta aguja y dos hilos superiores. Puede utilizar hilo de un mismo color o de diferentes colores para realizar puntadas decorativas.

PRECAUCIN

Colocacin de la aguja gemela Coloque la aguja gemela del mismo modo que las agujas sencillas (consulte las pginas 78). La parte plana de la aguja debe estar colocada hacia la parte trasera, y la parte redondeada hacia usted.

No cosa con agujas dobladas. Podran romperse y causar lesiones.

Colocacin del portacarrete adicional Introduzca el portacarrete adicional en el extremo del eje de la devanadora. Coloque el segundo carrete de hilo en el portacarrete adicional.

Enhebrado de agujas gemelas Deber enhebrar cada aguja por separado.

Nota Modelos equipados con un enhebrador de aguja

No se puede utilizar el enhebrador con agujas gemelas. En su lugar, la aguja gemela debe enhebrarse a mano, de delante a atrs. El uso del enhebrador podra causar averas en la mquina.

1 Enhebre la aguja izquierda. Siga las mismas instrucciones que para el enhebrado de una aguja sencilla (Consulte la pgina 17).

2 Enhebre la aguja derecha. Enhebre la aguja derecha igual que la izquierda utilizando el hilo del carrete del portacarrete adicional, pero sin pasar el hilo por la gua encima de la aguja; pselo antes a travs del ojo de la aguja derecha.

Al utilizar la aguja gemela, asegrese de colocar el pie para zig-zag J ya que, de lo contrario, la aguja puede romperse o la mquina averiarse.

Despus de ajustar la anchura de la puntada, gire lentamente la rueda hacia usted (en sentido contrario a las manecillas del reloj) y compruebe que la aguja no toca el pie prensatela. Si la aguja golpea el pie prensatela, la aguja podra doblarse o romperse.

Cuando utilice la aguja gemela, compruebe que la anchura de la puntada no est ajustada por encima de 2,5 ya que la aguja podra golpear la placa y romperse.

Al cambiar la direccin de costura, asegrese de levantar la aguja de la tela y, a continuacin, suba la palanca del pie prensatela y gire la tela. De lo contrario, la aguja podra romperse o la mquina averiarse.

Tensin del hilo

La tensin del hilo afectar a la calidad de las puntadas. Cuando cambie de tela o de hilo, es posible que necesite ajustar la tensin del hilo.

Recuerde Antes de comenzar a coser, recomendamos

que haga una prueba en un retal.

Tensin adecuada Una tensin adecuada es importante, puesto que un exceso o carencia de la misma afectar a la calidad de la costura y la tela podra fruncirse.

El hilo superior est demasiado tenso Aparecern ondas en la superficie de la tela.

Nota Si el hilo de la bobina se enhebra

incorrectamente, el hilo superior puede quedar demasiado tenso. En este caso, consulte Enhebrado del hilo inferior en la pgina 15 y vuelva a enhebrar el hilo de la bobina.

Solucin Reduzca la tensin girando el disco de control de la tensin superior a un nmero inferior.

El hilo superior est demasiado flojo Aparecern ondas en el revs de la tela.

Nota Si el hilo superior no est enhebrado

correctamente, puede que quede demasiado flojo. En este caso, consulte Enhebrado del hilo superior en la pgina 17 y vuelva a enhebrar el hilo superior.

Solucin Aumente la tensin girando el disco de control de la tensin superior a un nmero superior.

Costura recta

Las puntadas rectas se utilizan para la costura bsica.

* Gire el control de anchura de puntada para ajustar la posicin de la aguja. El ajuste del control en 5 selecciona la posicin izquierda para la aguja, mientras que el ajuste 0 selecciona la posicin derecha. Consulte Control de anchura de puntada en la pgina 12.

Costura sobrepuesta y telas elsticas Puede utilizar la puntada recta para la costura sobrepuesta y de telas ligeras. Puede utilizar la puntada elstica triple para coser telas elsticas.

Costura en zig-zag

Puntada de zig-zag Gire el selector de puntadas hasta la puntada de zig-zag y, a continuacin, comience a coser.

Es aconsejable que cosa utilizando la puntada recta al comienzo y al final de las puntadas de zig-zag. (Esto acta de puntada de refuerzo).

Puntada para satn El ajuste de la longitud de la puntada de zig-zag en el intervalo F-1 produce una puntada para satn (puntada de zig-zag pequea). La puntada para satn puede utilizarse para realizar ojales y puntadas decorativas. Ajuste el selector de puntadas en la puntada de zig-zag, la longitud de la puntada en el intervalo F-1 y, por ltimo, ajuste el control de anchura de puntada entre 0 y 5.

Costura invisible para dobladillo

La costura invisible para dobladillo puede utilizarse para terminar el borde de una labor de costura, como el dobladillo de unos pantalones, sin que se vea la puntada. Costura invisible para dobladillo: costura en telas no elsticas. Costura invisible elstica: para telas elsticas.

Recuerde Cuando el tamao de las piezas cilndricas

sea demasiado pequeo para deslizarse en el brazo o la longitud sea demasiado pequea, la tela no avanzar y es posible que no se consigan los resultados deseados.

Costura elstica

La puntada elstica puede utilizarse para zurcir, coser gomas o unir trozos de tela. A continuacin se explica cada opcin.

1 Coloque la tela de refuerzo debajo del rea que desee zurcir.

Utilice los alfileres de hilvanado para sujetar la tela de refuerzo.

Unin de trozos de tela La puntada elstica puede emplearse para unir dos trozos de tela y resulta muy eficaz a la hora de coser tejidos de punto. Si utiliza hilo de nylon, la puntada no se ver.

1 Coloque juntos los bordes de los dos trozos de tela y cntrelos debajo del pie prensatela.

2 Csalos utilizando la puntada elstica. Asegrese de tener los dos bordes de tela muy juntos.

Utilice los alfileres de hilvanado para sujetar los dos bordes de la tela juntos.

Costura de doble accin

Estos tipos de puntadas se utilizan para unir dos trozos de tela, por ejemplo, en la costura de patchwork.

Estas puntadas se utilizan para unir costuras y terminarlas en una sola operacin. Puntada overlock elstica: para coser telas elsticas.

1 Ponga la tela debajo del pie prensatela de forma que la lnea de costura (o punta de flecha) est a unos 3 mm (1/8 pulg.) a la izquierda del centro del pie prensatela.

Si el margen de costura tiene una anchura superior al dibujo de la puntada, corte y quite toda la tela sobrante despus de la costura.

coloque la tela de forma que su borde quede a la izquierda de la aguja.

Costura de plumas

La puntada de plumas puede emplearse como costura sobrepuesta decorativa para el bordado o para los dobladillos de mantas, manteles y paos.

1 Coloque la tela con el derecho hacia arriba y cosa 1 cm (3/8 pulg.) desde el borde de la tela.

2 Corte cerca de la costura. La costura impedir que la tela se deshilache.

Costura elstica en zig-zag triple

Esta puntada puede emplearse en aquellos casos en los que se utilizara una puntada de zig-zag para coser telas elsticas pesadas. Tambin puede utilizarse como costura sobrepuesta decorativa.

Costura decorativa

Estos tipos de puntadas se pueden emplear para costura sobrepuesta decorativa y costura de smocking. Consulte en la pgina 10 la anchura y la longitud de puntada recomendadas de cada puntada.

Realizacin de un ojal (ojal automtico de 1 paso)

La realizacin de un ojal es un proceso sencillo con resultados fiables. Con la costura de ojal automtico de 1 paso, se cose un ojal cambiando automticamente la direccin de costura cuando se utilizan la palanca para ojales y el pie para ojales.

Ajuste de ojales

Si la costura en los dos lados del ojal no es igual, puede realizar los siguientes ajustes.

1 Ajuste el control de longitud de puntada entre F y 1,5 y cosa el ojal en un retal para observar cmo se arrastra el material.

2 Si el lado derecho del ojal est demasiado abierto o apretado, ajuste el avance del material con el control de longitud de puntada.

Costura de botones

Al coser con la cremallera en el lado derecho, coloque la lengeta en la patilla izquierda del pie para cremalleras. Cuando cosa con la cremallera en el lado izquierdo, coloque la lengeta en la patilla derecha del pie para cremalleras.

ACCESORIOS OPCIONALES

Utilizacin del pie mvil

Este pie resulta muy til para coser materiales como la tela de vinilo, el cuero sinttico y el cuero fino, etc. Estos materiales son difciles de arrastrar durante la costura. El pie mvil impide que estos materiales se arruguen, deslicen o queden pegados entre el pie prensatela y el material.

Nota Utilice el pie mvil nicamente con

puntadas rectas o de zig-zag. No lo utilice con otros tipos de puntadas. No es posible coser puntadas en reversa con el pie mvil.

1 Apague la mquina.

2 Suba la aguja y el pie prensatela.

3 Afloje el tornillo del pie prensatela para retirar el soporte del pie.

MANTENIMIENTO

Restricciones para el engrase

Para evitar que se dae la mquina, no debe ser engrasada por el usuario. Esta mquina se fabric con la cantidad de aceite necesaria ya aplicada para garantizar un funcionamiento correcto, lo que hace que el engrase peridico no sea necesario.

Si se producen problemas, como dificultades para girar la rueda o un ruido no habitual, deje de utilizar inmediatamente la mquina y pngase en contacto con su distribuidor autorizado o el servicio de reparaciones autorizado ms cercano.
