Using the GS-1 EDITOR

This manual explains how to connect the GS-1 unit and GS-1 EDITOR app wirelessly via Bluetooth, and how to use GS-1 EDITOR.

Connecting the GS-1 to GS-1 EDITOR (Android) 1. Power-on the GS-1 unit and the mobile

device.

2. In your mobile devices settings, turn Bluetooth switch on.

NOTE

Even if the device list on the mobile device shows GS-1, dont tap it.

3. Press the GS-1s [Bluetooth] button. The unit enters pairing mode, and the Bluetooth indicator blinks rapidly.

4. Launch the GS-1 EDITOR app that you installed on your mobile device.

5. Tap [Bluetooth MIDI DEVICE] that appears on the app you launched.

Set location data to on.

* Note that the GS-1 EDITOR does not use location data.

6. Tap GS-1. On the mobile device screen, verify that * is shown at the upper right of GS-1. * If GS-1 is not shown, tap SCAN at the very

bottom of the Bluetooth Devices screen to scan again.

* If the Bluetooth indicator on the GS-1 is not rapidly blinking, press the [Bluetooth] button once more to make it do so.

7. Tap the back button on your mobile device to return to the previous screen.

8. Verify that GS-1 is shown for CONNECT on the app.

9. Tap [OK] to start communication.

If You Cant Connect (Android) Check the following points. Items to Check Cause/Action

Is the Bluetooth indicator on the GS-1 rapidly blinking?

The Bluetooth indicator is not rapidly blinking

Bluetooth is not in standby mode on the GS-1. Press the [Bluetooth] button to make it rapidly blink.

Is the unit paired with GS-1?

When pairing, tap "GS-1" in Bluetooth MIDI Device setting on the app, instead of Bluetooth setting on your mobile device. When you turn the Bluetooth switch of your mobile device on, GS-1 might appear in the devices list, but you should not tap it. If youve accidentally tapped it, follow the steps in Quit all apps on your mobile device, and retry pairing (p. 6).

Is Bluetooth working properly?

On your mobile device, turn Bluetooth switch off and then on again.

Is location data turned off?

Turn on the location data setting of your mobile device. As per the specifications of Android OS (Android 6.0 and later), you need to turn location data on to enable Bluetooth.

If you checked the above points and took the appropriate measures but you still cannot connect, try the following.

Try pairing again

Following the steps in Quit all apps on your mobile device, and retry pairing (p. 6), quit all apps that are running on your mobile device and try pairing again.

Reset the instrument to factory default

Reset the GS-1 to its factory default settings and try pairing again. 1. Turn the [MASTER VOLUME] and

[SYNTH CTL] knobs to the MIN setting (counterclockwise all the way), the [SYNTH MEMORY] knob to the MAX setting (clockwise all the way), and flip the [MODE] switch to the SYNTH setting.

* Make sure that nothing is connected to the USB port.

2. While holding down the [Bluetooth] button, insert the plug into the OUTPUT jack.

* The instruments power turns on, and the POWER indicator blinks green.

3. Press the [Bluetooth] button again.

The factory reset is executed.

Turn the power off and on again

Follow the steps in Turn the mobile device and the GS-1 off and then on again (p. 8) to try pairing again.

If youve tried all of the above and still cant connect, contact your dealer or a Roland customer service center.

Quit all apps on your mobile device, and retry pairing Quit all apps that are running on your mobile device.

1. Tap the Android multitasking button and swipe up on the app screen.

* The procedure for closing apps may differ depending on your mobile device. Use the method thats appropriate for your device to close the apps.

2. Tap the gear icon next to GS-1 in Paired devices, and tap Unpair.

3. Turn the Bluetooth switch off.

* The procedure for unpairing described in step 23 may differ depending on your mobile device.

4. Start pairing again by following the steps in Connecting the GS-1 to GS-1 EDITOR (Android) (p. 2).

Turn the mobile device and the GS-1 off and then on again

1. Turn off the mobile device and the GS-1 unit.

2. Wait for about 10 seconds and turn the power on again.

3. Start pairing again by following the steps in Connecting the GS-1 to GS-1 EDITOR (Android) (p. 2).

If you are still unable to connect with the app even after taking these measures, please contact the Roland customer service center.

Connecting the GS-1 and GS-1 EDITOR (iOS) 1. Power-on the GS-1 unit and the mobile

device.

2. In your mobile devices settings, turn Bluetooth switch on.

NOTE

Even if the devices list on the mobile device shows GS-1, dont tap it.

3. Press the GS-1s [Bluetooth] button. The Bluetooth indicator rapidly blinks, and the instrument enters pairing mode.

4. Launch the GS-1 EDITOR app that you installed on your mobile device.

5. Tap [Bluetooth MIDI DEVICE] that appears on the app you launched.

6. Tap GS-1. The GS-1 in the list on the app displays as Connected. * If the Bluetooth indicator on the GS-1 is not

rapidly blinking, press the [Bluetooth] button once more to make it do so.

7. If Bluetooth Pairing Request appears, tap Pair.

8. Tap Back to return to the previous screen.

9. Verify that GS-1 is shown for CONNECT on the app.

10. Tap [OK] to start communication.

If You Cant Connect (iOS) Check the following points. Items to Check Cause/Action

Is the Bluetooth indicator on the GS-1 rapidly blinking?

The Bluetooth indicator is not rapidly blinking

Bluetooth is not in standby mode on the GS-1. Press the [Bluetooth] button to make it rapidly blink.

Is the unit paired with GS-1?

When pairing, tap "GS-1" in Bluetooth MIDI Device setting on the app, instead of Bluetooth setting on your mobile device. When you turn the Bluetooth switch of your mobile device on, GS-1 might appear in the devices list, but you should not tap it. If youve accidentally tapped it, follow the steps in Quit all apps on your mobile device, and retry pairing (p. 13).

Is Bluetooth working properly?

On your mobile device, turn Bluetooth switch off and then on again.

If you checked the above points and took the appropriate measures but you still cannot connect, try the following.

Pair again Pairing

Following the steps in Quit all apps on your mobile device, and retry pairing (p. 13), quit all apps that are running on your mobile device and try pairing again.

Reset to factory default

Reset the GS-1 to its factory default settings and try pairing again. 1. Turn the [MASTER VOLUME] and

Quit all apps on your mobile device, and retry pairing Quit all apps that are running on your mobile device.

1. Double-click the home button, and swipe up on the app screen.

* If youre using the iPhone X, iPhone 11 or iPhone 12, the procedure for closing an app is different. Use the method thats appropriate for your device to close the apps.

2. With the Bluetooth indicator on the GS-1 lit up blue, hold down the [Bluetooth] button to make the indicator blink blue.

3. Turn the Bluetooth switch off. The procedure for step 23 results in unpairing.

4. Start pairing again by following the steps in Connecting the GS-1 and GS-1 EDITOR (iOS) (p. 9).

Turn the mobile device and the GS-1 off and then on again

1. Turn off the mobile device and the GS-1.

2. Wait for about 10 seconds and turn the power on again.

3. Start pairing again by following the steps in Connecting the GS-1 and GS-1 EDITOR (iOS) (p. 9).

Using GS-1 EDITOR

To edit values Slide up or down to edit a parameter. Long-press to enter a numeric value or choose from a list.

You can edit the tones of the GS-1 using your mobile device.

Editor Basic Screen

Switches to the CTL FUNCTION settings screen.

You can save the settings on the GS-1 that youve edited.

The currently selected synth memory is shown here. You can switch between memories by operating the SYNTH MEMORY knob on the GS-1.

Use this knob to switch between different synth sound types.

LEAD Suitable for playing solos or leads.

PAD Soft sounds used as sonic fill-ins.

STRING Synth strings sounds.

BELL Sounds with metallic resonance.

ORGAN Organ sounds.

BASS Bass synth sounds.

DUAL Fat sounds.

HOLD This sound is suitable for when youre using CTL FUNCTION: HOLD.

VARIATION This selects variations for the type that is selected.

TONE 0100 These knobs adjust the sound of the effect thats selected by TYPE and VARIATION.

RESONANCE* 0100

PITCH* -240+24

DEPTH 0100

DIRECT LEVEL 0100 Adjusts the volume of the direct sound.

SYNTH LEVEL 0100 Adjusts the volume of the synth sound.

* RESONANCE or PITCH is shown depend on the combination of TYPE and VARIATION.

SYNTH CTL, EXP (OFF), EXP (ON)

Parameter Value Explanation

FUNCTION

These parameters are for selecting the functions for the [SYNTH CTL] knob and the EV-1-WL pedal (sold separately).* * You can set different functions for

when the EXP SW is OFF (the LED on the EV-1-WL is dark) and ON (the LED on the EV-1-WL is lit).

TONE TONE is assigned.

EXP SW, CTL1, CTL2

Parameter Value Explanation

FUNCTION

These parameters select the function for the EXP SW, CTL1 and CTL2 on the EV-1-WL (sold separately).

OFF No function is controlled.

HOLD This makes the sound you play sustain.

PITCH Applies a pitch-bend effect.

PARAMETER 1 -240+24 (PITCH)

Sets how much the pitch changes in semitones.

PARAMETER 2 0100 (PITCH) Adjusts the time over which the pitch changes.

SW MODE

TOGGLE The effect changes each time you press the switch.

MOMENT Switches the effect only while the switch is pressed.

Saving an Edited Effect in the GS-1 (WRITE) 1. Tap the [WRITE] button, enter a name

and tap the [WRITE] button again.

* When the data is saved, it overwrites the memory on the GS-1. The previous settings cannot be recovered.

LIBRARIAN Screen This screen lets you back up the memories stored on the GS-1.

LIVESET LIST Tap the [LIBRARIAN] button; the liveset list appears. You can create up to 120 livesets.

Creates a new liveset.

Exports the liveset.

Copies/deletes the liveset.

Tap to edit the name of the liveset.

Tap to show the user memory list in that liveset.

Imports a liveset.

Show the number of user memories in the liveset.

Importing All GS-1 User Memories into the

LIBRARIAN (IMPORT FROM GS-1)

Heres how you can import all of the GS-1s user memories into LIBRARIAN.

1. Tap the [LIBRARIAN] button.

2. In the upper part of the screen, tap the button.

3. Tap GS-1, and then tap the [NEXT] button.

4. Tap ALL BACKUP, and then tap the [NEXT] button.

* The ALL BACKUP setting saves all user memories as a liveset.

* SELECT MEMORY (FROM TO) saves the user memories between FROM and TO as a liveset.

* SELECT MEMORY saves only the specified user memory as a liveset.

* To import a small number of user memories into LIBRARIAN, use SELECT MEMORY (FROM TO) or SELECT MEMORY.

Exporting a LIBRARIAN Liveset to the GS-1

(EXPORT TO GS-1)

Heres how to export a saved liveset to a user memory on the GS-1. * You can set 150 user memories in a liveset, but

only six user memories can be exported back to the GS-1.

1. Tap the [LIBRARIAN] button.

2. In the upper part of the screen, tap the button.

3. Tap GS-1, and then tap the [NEXT] button.

4. Select the liveset that you want to export.

5. In the liveset area, tap ALL MEMORY, then tap the [NEXT] button.

* ALL MEMORY exports all user memories in a liveset to the GS-1.

* SELECT MEMORY (FROM TO) exports the user memories between FROM and TO to the GS-1.

* SELECT MEMORY exports the specified user memory back to the GS-1.

6. Select the user memory at which you want to start overwriting the data on the GS-1, and tap the [EXPORT] button.

* If youre exporting many user memories to the GS-1, it may take a while. To export a small number of user memories to the GS-1, use SELECT MEMORY (FROM TO) or SELECT MEMORY.

Exporting a Liveset from LIBRARIAN to the Mobile

Device (EXPORT TO FILE)

Heres how a liveset from LIBRARIAN can be converted into a liveset file and exported to the mobile device.

1. Tap the [LIBRARIAN] button.

2. In the upper part of the screen, tap the button.

3. Tap FILE, and then tap the [NEXT] button.

4. Select the liveset that you want to export, and tap the [EXPORT] button.

5. The data is exported to the mobile device.

Service (EXPORT TO CLOUD)

Heres how a liveset from LIBRARIAN can be converted to a liveset file and exported to a cloud service.

1. Tap the [LIBRARIAN] button.

2. In the upper part of the screen, tap the button.

3. Tap CLOUD, and then tap the [NEXT] button.

4. Select the liveset that you want to save to a cloud service, and tap the [EXPORT] button.

5. The Cloud screen appears, allowing you to export the file.

Choose iCloud Drive for an iOS device, or Google Drive for an Android device.

In some cases, your mobile device might show more than one cloud service. This app only supports operation using iCloud Drive on iOS devices and Google Drive on Android devices.

Heres how a liveset file previously exported to a cloud service can be imported into LIBRARIAN.

1. Tap the [LIBRARIAN] button.

4. Select a liveset file that was saved in the cloud.
