The following general safety precautions must be observed during all phases of operation, service, and repair of the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument.

All safety instructions should be read and understood before installation, operation and maintenance of the instrument. Failure to comply with these precautions or with specific warnings elsewhere in this manual violates safety standards of design, manufacture and intended use of the instrument.

1 Safety Information Power Cords

Power Cords

Different power cords are offered as options with the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument. The female end of all power cords is identical. It plugs into the power-input socket at the rear of the instrument. The male end of each power cord is different and designed to match the wall socket of a particular country or region.

WARNING Unintended use of power cords

Using power cords for unintended purposes can lead to personal injury or damage of electronic equipment.

Never use a power cord other than the one that Agilent shipped with this instrument.

Never use the power cords that Agilent Technologies supplies with this instrument for any other equipment.

Never use cables other than the ones supplied by Agilent Technologies to ensure proper functionality and compliance with safety or EMC regulations.

WARNING Absence of ground connection

The absence of ground connection can lead to electric shock or short circuit.

Never operate your instrumentation from a power outlet that has no ground connection.

If your product is provided with a grounding type power plug, the instrument chassis and cover must be connected to an electrical ground to minimize shock hazard.

The ground pin must be firmly connected to an electrical ground (safety ground) terminal at the power outlet. Any interruption of the protective (grounding) conductor or disconnection of the protective earth terminal will cause a potential shock hazard that could result in personal injury.

Instruments that appear damaged or defective should be made inoperative and secured against unintended operation until they can be repaired by qualified service personnel.

Before the instrument is switched on, all protective ground terminals, extension cords, auto-transformers, and devices connected to it must be connected to a protective ground socket. Any interruption of the protective grounding will cause a potential shock hazard that could result in serious personal injury. Whenever it is likely that the protection has been impaired, the instrument must be made inoperative and be secured against any intended operation. To operate the instrument safely: Do not remove any cover of the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument. Avoid any maintenance of the instrument under voltage. Do not let liquid drip into the instrument. It could cause a shock or it could

damage the instrument. Do not replace components of the instruments (e.g. electrode cartridge) with

power turned on. Do not operate the instrument in the presence of flammable gases or fumes.

Operation of any electrical instrument in such an environment constitutes a definite safety hazard.

Do not install substitute parts or make any unauthorized modification to the instrument.

1 Safety Information Laser Safety

Laser Safety

The Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument is classified as a class 1 laser product (IEC/EN 60825-1:2014). During operation of the instrument, no laser light is accessible to the user.

When the laser is in use, the laser light source emits light at a power that may be harmful to the eyes. To prevent operator exposure to potentially harmful laser light, an interlock mechanism turns off the laser whenever the lid of the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument is not closed. Furthermore, the lid cannot be completely opened and has a black light absorbing surface to prevent any potential laser light reflection.

The laser light source is securely enclosed within the instrument and is by design not accessible. It is not allowed to access the laser source.

The laser source is a class 3B laser with a maximum output power of 10 mW (CW) at a wavelength between 625 and 640 nm.

WARNING Harmful laser light

The laser light source emits light at a power that may be harmful to the eyes.

Avoid exposure to the beam.

Never look into the beam or direct it towards someone else.

System interlocks should never be disabled.

The laser source may not be accessed.

In case of defective instrument or laser contact Agilent Technologies.

NOTE Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in hazardous radiation exposure.

Chemical and Biological Safety

To operate the instrument safely: Observe all cautionary information printed on the original solution containers

prior to their use. Because leaks, spills, or loss of sample may generate aerosols, observe

proper safety precautions. Instrument covers have not been designed as bioseals for aerosol or liquid

containment. Handle body fluids with care because they can transmit disease. No known

test offers complete assurance that they are free of micro-organisms. Some of the most virulent Hepatitis (B and C) and HIV (I-V) viruses, atypical mycobacteria, and certain systemic fungi further emphasize the need for aerosol protection.

Always follow local state and federal biohazard handling regulation when disposing of biohazardous waste material.

WARNING Toxic and hazardous solvents

The handling of solvents and reagents can hold health risks.

When working with solvents observe appropriate safety procedures (for example, goggles, safety gloves and protective clothing) as described in the material handling and safety data sheet supplied by the solvent vendor, especially when toxic or hazardous solvents are used.

WARNING Pathogenic, toxic, or radioactive samples

Handling and use of pathogenic, toxic, or radioactive samples and of genetically modified organisms holds risks for health and environment.

Ensure that all necessary safety regulations, guidelines, precautions and practices are adhered to accordingly.

Consult the laboratory safety officer for advise on the level of containment required for the application, and proper decontamination or sterilization procedures to follow if fluids escape from containers.

Handle all infectious samples according to good laboratory procedures and methods to prevent spread of disease.

Dispose of all waste solutions and products according to appropriate environmental health and safety guidelines.

WARNING Harmful chemical and biological substances

Residues of samples may contain chemicals and biological substances that are dangerous and harmful to persons working on the 2100 Bioanalyzer instument.

The Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument and any accessories must be decontaminated before requesting service by an Agilent Technologies Field Service Representative and before returning the instrument to Agilent Technologies for repair or replacement.

Intended Use of the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer System

The Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer system is intended to analyze nucleic acids or proteins by means of electrophoresis. The system separates and detects stained DNA, RNA or protein molecules by using microfluidic technology and laser induced fluorescence.

The Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer system is designed for professional use to exclusively run Agilent Bioanalyzer kits including chips and associated reagents.

For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures.

Do not use this product in any manner not specified by the manufacturer. The protective features of this product may be impaired if it is used in a manner not specified in the operation instructions.

Netzkabel

Fr den Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer werden unterschiedliche Netzkabel als Optionen angeboten. Die Buchse ist bei jedem Netzkabel identisch. Sie wird in die Netzanschlussdose auf der Gerterckseite gesteckt. Der Netzstecker der Netzkabel ist je nach den in der Region oder dem Land blichen Steckdosen unterschiedlich.

WARNUNG Nicht bestimmungsgeme Verwendung der Netzkabel

Nicht bestimmungsgeme Verwendung von Kabeln kann zu Personenschaden und Beschdigung elektronischer Gerte fhren.

Verwenden Sie kein anderes als das von Agilent mit diesem Gert gelieferte Netzkabel.

Verwenden Sie Kabel, die Agilent Technologies mit diesem Gert geliefert hat, niemals anderweitig.

Benutzen Sie immer nur Originalkabel von Agilent Technologies, um eine einwandfreie Funktion und die Einhaltung von Sicherheits- bzw. EMV-Bestimmungen zu gewhrleisten.

Ist das Produkt mit einem Schuko-Netzstecker ausgestattet, mssen Gertegehuse und -abdeckung zur Minimierung des Stromschlagrisikos geerdet sein.

Der Massepunkt ist ber die Netzsteckdose fest an Erde (Schutzerde) zu legen. Bei einer Unterbrechung des Schutzleiters oder bei Trennung des Gerts vom Schutzerde-Anschluss besteht Verletzungsgefahr durch Stromschlag.

Vor dem Einschalten des Gertes mssen alle Erdungsanschlsse, Verlngerungskabel, Autotransformatoren und angeschlossenen Gerte an eine geerdete Steckdose angeschlossen werden. Jede Unterbrechung der Schutzerdung bedeutet ein potenzielles Stromschlagrisiko, was zu schweren Verletzungen fhren kann. Das Gert muss auer Betrieb genommen und gegen jede Nutzung gesichert werden, sofern der Verdacht besteht, dass die Erdung beschdigt ist. Zur Gewhrleistung eines sicheren Betriebes: Entfernen Sie keine Abdeckung des Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzers. Fhren Sie keine Wartungsarbeiten aus, wenn das Gert unter Spannung

steht. Lassen Sie keine Flssigkeit in das Gert gelangen. Dies kann zu einem

Stromschlag oder einer Beschdigung des Gerts fhren. Ersetzen Sie keine Komponenten (z. B. Elektrodenkartuschen), whrend das

Gert eingeschaltet ist. Das Gert darf nicht in Gegenwart von brennbaren Gasen oder Dmpfen

betrieben werden. Ein Betrieb von elektrischen Gerten unter diesen Bedingungen stellt eine groe Sicherheitsgefahr dar.

Bauen Sie keine Austauschteile ein und nehmen Sie keine nicht autorisierten Vernderungen am Gert vor.

WARNUNG Gerteschden

Personenschden (z. B. Stromschlag, Vergiftung)

Eventuell beschdigte oder defekte Gerte mssen auer Betrieb genommen und gegen jede unbeabsichtigte Wiederinbetriebnahme gesichert werden, bis die Reparatur durch einen qualifizierten, fr Wartungsaufgaben geschulten Servicetechniker erfolgt ist.

Lasersicherheit

Der Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer ist als Produkt mit einem Laser der Klasse 1 klassifiziert (IEC/EN 60825-1:2014). Beim Betrieb des Gerts ist der Benutzer keinem Laserlicht ausgesetzt. Wenn der Laser in Betrieb ist, sendet die Laserquelle Licht mit einer fr das Auge schdlichen Strke aus. Um zu verhindern, dass der Bediener potenziell schdlicher Laserstrahlung ausgesetzt wird, schaltet eine Sicherheitssperre den Laser aus, wenn die Abdeckung des Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzers nicht geschlossen ist. Zudem kann die Abdeckung nicht vollstndig geffnet werden. Sie verfgt auch ber eine schwarze, lichtabsorbierende Oberflche, um zu verhindern, dass die Laserstrahlung eventuell reflektiert wird. Die Laserlichtquelle ist sicher im Gert eingeschlossen und ist aufgrund des Gertedesigns nicht zugnglich. Es ist untersagt, sich Zugang zur Laserquelle zu verschaffen. Die Laserquelle ist ein Laser der Klasse 3B mit einer maximalen Ausgangsleistung von 10 mW (CW) bei einer Wellenlnge zwischen 625 und 640 nm.

WARNUNG Schdliche Laserstrahlung

Die Laserquelle sendet Licht mit einer fr das Auge schdlichen Strke aus.

Nicht dem Strahl aussetzen.

Blicken Sie niemals direkt in den Laserstrahl und richten Sie ihn nicht auf andere Personen.

Der Sicherheitsschalter sollte niemals deaktiviert werden.

Der Zugang zur Laserquelle ist untersagt.

Sollten das Gert oder der Laser defekt sein, nehmen Sie bitte Kontakt zu Agilent Technologies auf.

HINWEIS Die Benutzung von Bedienelementen, Anpassungen oder die Ausfhrung von Prozeduren, die hier nicht beschrieben sind, knnen zu gefhrlicher Strahlung fhren.

Con el instrumento Bioanalyzer Agilent 2100 se ofrecen diferentes cables de alimentacin opcionales. El terminal hembra de todos ellos es idntico. Dicho terminal encaja en la entrada de alimentacin de la parte trasera del instrumento. El terminal macho de cada cable de alimentacin es diferente y est diseado para coincidir con los enchufes de corriente de cada pas o regin.

El instrumento Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer est clasificado como producto lser de clase 1 (IEC/EN 60825-1:2014). Durante el funcionamiento del instrumento, el usuario no tiene ningn acceso a la luz lser.

Cuando se est utilizando el lser, la fuente de lser emitir luz con una potencia tal que podra causar lesiones oculares al usuario. Para impedir la exposicin del usuario a esta luz lser potencialmente daina, un mecanismo de bloqueo apagar la luz lser siempre que la tapa del Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer no est cerrada. Adems, la tapa no se puede abrir por completo y cuenta con una superficie que absorbe luz negra para evitar la posible reflexin de luz lser.

La fuente de luz lser est encerrada de forma segura en el interior del instrumento y, por diseo, no puede accederse a ella. No est permitido acceder a la fuente lser.

La fuente lser es un lser de clase 3B con una potencia mxima de salida de 10 mW (onda continua) a una longitud de onda entre 625 y 640 nm.

Antes de o instrumento ser ligado, todos os terminais de aterramento de proteo, cabos de extenso, autotransformadores e dispositivos conectados a ele devem ser conectados a uma tomada de aterramento de proteo. Qualquer interrupo do aterramento de proteo causar um possvel perigo de choque eltrico, podendo resultar em ferimentos pessoais graves. Sempre que seja provvel que a proteo tenha sido comprometida, o instrumento dever ser desativado e protegido contra qualquer operao prevista. Para operar o instrumento com segurana: No remova nenhuma tampa do instrumento Bioanalyzer Agilent 2100. Evite qualquer manuteno do instrumento energizado. No deixe que lquido pingue no instrumento. Isso pode causar um choque ou

danificar o instrumento. No substitua componentes dos instrumentos (por exemplo, cartucho de

eletrodo) quando ligados. No opere o instrumento na presena de fumaa ou gases inflamveis. A

operao de qualquer instrumento eltrico em um ambiente como esse constitui um perigo efetivo de segurana.

Segurana do laser

O instrumento Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer classificado como um produto laser de classe 1 (IEC/EN 60825-1:2014). Durante a operao do instrumento, nenhuma luz laser acessvel ao usurio.

Quando o laser est em uso, a fonte de radiao do laser emite luz com uma potncia que pode ser prejudicial para os olhos. Para evitar a exposio do operador luz laser potencialmente prejudicial, um mecanismo de bloqueio desliga o laser sempre que a tampa do instrumento Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer no estiver fechada. Alm disso, a tampa no pode ser completamente aberta e tem uma superfcie de absoro de luz negra para evitar qualquer reflexo potencial da luz laser.

A fonte de radiao do laser firmemente fechada dentro do instrumento e foi projetada para no ser acessvel. No permitido acessar a fonte de laser.

A fonte de laser um laser de classe 3B com uma potncia de sada mxima de 10 mW (CW) em um comprimento de onda entre 625 e 640 nm.

The instrument's power supply has wide ranging capabilities and accepts any line voltage in the range 100 - 240 V 10% with a line frequency of 50 - 60 Hz 5% (see also Table 1 on page 115 for more details). Consequently, there is no voltage selector in the rear of the instrument.

Damaged Packaging

Upon receipt of your Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer system and a potential computer, inspect the shipping containers for any signs of damage. If containers or cushioning material are damaged, save them until the contents have been checked for completeness and the 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument and computer have been mechanically and electrically checked. If the shipping container or cushion material is damaged, notify the carrier as well as Agilent Technologies. Save the shipping material for the carrier's inspection.

CAUTION If there are signs of damage to the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzerinstrument

Do not attempt to install the instrument.

Installing the 2100 Bioanalyzer System

After unpacking and checking the completeness of the shipment, the 2100 Bioanalyzer system is ready to be installed. Depending on your purchased item, the installation requires up to two steps: 1 Setting up the PC. 2 Setting up the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument.

Setting up your PC For setting up the PC, please refer to the instructions supplied with the PC.

Setting up the 2100 Bioanalyzer Instrument To set-up the 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument: 1 Locate bench space that meets the requirements described in Bench

space on page 111. 2 Place the instrument on the bench in an upright position.

NOTE If you have problems installing your instrument, refer to the Troubleshooting section of the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer System Maintenance and Troubleshooting Guide.

CAUTION Damage by electrostatic discharge

The heater plate and electrodes are sensitive to electrostatic discharge.

Make sure that you are grounded before inserting a chip to prevent the instrument from being damaged by electrostatic discharge. The lid is grounded to leak off electrostatic energy of the operator.

3 Open the lid of the 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument and slide the electrode cartridge into the lid and move the lever into a flat (closed) position.

4 Connect one end of the serial cable to the RS-232 port located at the rear of the instrument.

5 Connect the other end of the serial cable to the serial port (COM-port) of your PC.

6 If your PC is not equipped with a serial port, use the USB/serial adapter cable that is provided with the instrument.

7 Ensure that the power switch located at the rear of the instrument is in off position.

8 Plug the female end of the power cord into the power input socket of the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument. Plug the male end of the power cord into the electrical outlet.

NOTE The power input socket accepts a line voltage of 100-240 VAC 10% with a line frequency of 50-60 Hz. Maximum power consumption is 60 VA. There is no voltage selector at the rear of the instrument because the power supply has a wide-ranging capability.

Turning on the 2100 Bioanalyzer Instrument

1 Turn on your Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument. The power switch is located at the rear of the instrument, where the power cable plugs in (see step 4 on page 123).

2 The status indicator lamp will light green if power is present and all instrument self-tests have passed successfully.

If the status indicator lamp lights red, this indicates a hardware error. In this case, please refer to the Troubleshooting section of the Agilent 2100 Bioanalyzer Maintenance and Troubleshooting Guide or the Online Help.

CAUTION Condensation within the instrument

Temperature fluctuations could cause condensation within the instrument.

Do not use the instrument under conditions with temperature fluctuations.

Let the instrument equilibrate to room temperature for one day to avoid damage of the electronics.

Connecting the Instrument via the USB/Serial Cable

If you connect the 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument via the USB/serial adapter cable, the driver needs to be installed on the PC. This is preinstalled on bundle PCs but needs to be installed manually on 3rd party PCs.

The driver can be found on the 2100 Expert Software USB media. For installation instructions please refer to the readme file of the 2100 Expert Software and the Installation and connections instructions sheet, see https://www.agilent.com/en/product/automated-electrophoresis/bioanalyzer- systems/bioanalyzer-software/2100-expert-software-228259#support.

Starting the 2100 Expert Software

The 2100 Expert Software is pre-installed on bundle PCs. However, the full functionality of the software becomes available only if you add the required license key(s). License keys are supplied with the instrument.

1 Open the 2100 Expert Software by double-clicking the icon on the desktop. 2 Select Help > Registration and highlight the Add License tab. 3 Add the appropriate license key.

4 To establish instrument-PC communication, assign a COM-port in the instrument context. When the communication is established, instrument specific information like serial number, vendor information and firmware version is displayed.

Preparations When starting the 2100 Expert Software, wait a few seconds until the self-test procedures for the 2100 Bioanalyzer instrument are finished. Otherwise the software may not recognize the connected instrument.
